I just got ahold of a blue G10 Spydeco Dodo with a plain-edge S30V blade.

i saw this knife many times online, in catalogs, etc. but never gave it a serious thought. visually speaking, it doesn't do much for me. however, i get one for free. that is a good way for me to give a knife a second thought.

first impressions: the scales were rough and the edges of the scales and the metal was a little to sharp for my tastes. the knife was kinda ugly. the ball-bearing lock was a little hard to dis-engage. the blade was the sharpest, most amazing cutting surface i have ever seen.

i got it in the morning and used it throughout the day open packages, cutting up boxes, etc. i probubly use a knife 80 times a day for various things. i was very impressed with the way this blade suited the kind of cutting i do (packages, boxes). it's almost the perfect utitlity knife. the blade is easy to control and the point and cutting surface is easy to keep track of. the handle is very comfortable and just in using it i wore the sharp edges off the G10. the blade comes out fast with one hand either by using the thumb hole or even a quick snap of the wrist can cause the blade to snap to action. closing it is still a little awkward because the ball-bearing lock in inset into the handle enought that it's tricky to reach. definatly a fault. then we come to another problem.

the lock-up failed. this particular knife had lockup issues. when firm pressure was applied to the spine of the blade the lock would fail. the tolerances of the knife wouldn't allow full lock-up. this knife is going back to spyderco. lucky i had another one. i swapped it and the second one was flawless.

the clip is very stiff and needs to be taken off and bent with pliars. (broke one trying to bend it by hand) it'll eat up a pocket if you don't adjust it well.

4 days of heavy use, blade still shaves. i'm in love with this knife. it's in my pocket every day at work.

downside:
i'm not sold on the lockup. it just seems like a flawed version of the axis lock and i'd prefer the real thing.
the finish was a LITTLE rough. but it'll break in nice.
a small quality control issue. i'm sure it'll be resolved with typical spyderco charm (fast, friendly and final)
ugly

upside:
cuts very well.
hold's an edge like a dream.
great utility blade shape.
sturdy.
blue.
it's a hrd working knife.

i'd say it's DEFINALTY worth the going rate for someone who needs a good working knife. i'd give it a full recomendation. the upside is good. give it a try and thank me later

Good review Dan. I used one of these in a passaround, and my experiences mirrored yours except for the lock failure problem. I.e., mine was perfect in every way :)

Probably the only thing stopping me from picking one of these up is the fact that the ball bearing was recessed too far into the handle for me to easily unlock the knife. The sides of my thumb were a bit abraded after that passaround!

Thanks,

Matthew

I have been carrying one for a few months and have had none of the problems mentioned. This could all be QC things.

As far as the lock, I believe there is a very good reason for the deep recess. The nature of the ball bearing lock makes it very smooth and easy to open. I think everyone can agree on that. However, if the lock were not recessed enough, the ball bearing would stick out from the sides and that smooth action could work against you and make it easy to inadvertantly disengage the lock. I have had this happen to me with every Axis lock or Rolling lock at least once. That's why I don't own one. However, I haven't even come close to accidentally disengaging it. (yet)

At this point, I am sold on the Dodo!

Another observation on the lock, In order to make it fit within the frame of the knife, the ball bearing had to a be of a certain size. Much larger and the Dodo would have to be a much bigger knife.

Thanks, Dan Fisher. I haven't tried one, but I ordered it anyways. One of the stores whose online catalog said "out of stock" had a fresh batch of the ones in black G-10. Toll-free numbers rule! I can't wait.

Thanks, again, Dan Fisher.

Dodo dreams and Tazmanian tiger wishes!
