I have an old Spyderco DoubleStuff sharpening stone I have used for years. I regularly use the ol Comet cleaning routine to get the steel out of the "pores". What I really need to do is refresh or dress the surface. Especially on the coarse side. It seems that the stones are more slick and less abrasive now and less effective at sharpening. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks

I always used to use comet on my ceramic stones. On the recomendation of some people here, I tried Barkeepers friend. It works a lot better than comet.
It cleaned a white stone the size of the double stuff with almost no scrubbing at all. I think that along with the abrasive properties the Barkeepers friend works chemicaly also. You might give that a try.
I also use a stiff bristled fingernail brush on severly clogged stones.

I think ceramics can be dressed with diamonds, so a diamond stone of appropriate grit would work.

I roughed up a pair of Spyderco 701 medium rods with a medium diamond sharpener and it seems to have worked well. I did it under running water and note that it didn't do the cheap diamond stone anygood.

On cleaning the stones, try "Cameo Stainless and Aluminum Cleaner". It has a mild grit like Comet but has sulfamic acid rather than chlorine. The acid actually dissolves the metal particles and really works well. Available on the same aisle as Comet. Works great on ceramic rods too.

Try getting some "Barkeepers Friend" to clean the rods. I've been using Comet for the past year with OK results. There was still grey streaks in the rods after a good scrubing. With BKF, it cleans up the streaks left behind by the comet. BKF is only $1.77 before tax at the local walmart so give that a shot before you dress your dblstuff.
