Spyderco endura 4 ffg vs wave?

I'm pretty much set on buying one of these two knives for my new edc. I just can't make up my mind on which one to get. Obviously the wave is going to be a better self defense blade and the ffg is going to be a better cutter. Both are important to me so which one do you think is better at a self defense and also a cutting? How would the ffg do at stabbing and how much does the grind on the wave effect cutting is what I'm really interested in. Thanks for any advise!

Waved enduras are just about the ugliest knives out their in my eye. I'd go with a Benchmade barrage over either of those for your uses, but if I had to pick it'd be the FFG endura for mainly edc, or the wave if you're more concerned with self defense.. If it's a back up for your concealed carry definetly just go with the FFG. If its your only means of self defense maybe the waved endura.

I guess you need to decide which task is most important to you. Are you carrying an EDC primarily which might be used for SD, or are you carrying an SD blade which might need to occasionally cut things?

I have had both and they both cut well, ffg is a better slicer and comes in multiple colors and is just as pointy if not pointier than the waves model. Why not just put a zip tie or carefully grind a notch in a ffg. Charlie mike does some awesome wave mods if you are that set on the wave. You will probably end up with both eventually enduras are incredible knives for the money.

I agree that the endura/delica wave models are ugly, perhaps the ugliest knives I've ever personally seen. Yet that's all I carry. I find the wave opening very handy for edc tasks. I know it seems trivial, but having to take the knife out of pocket, change grips to open it, and then change grips again to hold the knife is cumbersome for me now.

The wave works well as a bottle opener too.

Well I know enough about self defense to know that slashing is more important than stabbing. However have a knife that will stab well is a plus. I really haven't played around with enough knives to know how blade shape effects stabbing. If I can get my hands on a manix and it penetrates well I may go with that.

I carry the FFG and agree it's ugly but for me it's perfect. I love how it opens and think it's a better slicer

Are you sure?

If I could go back and do it over again, I'd switch out to the wave versions. I got spoiled with an Emerson, and when it comes to ease of deployment you can't get any better.

I could care less about a knife in a self defense role, I carry a gun every day. If you needed to get that close with a knife, it's bad either way. Also, I'd look into self defense with a trained method, as you're not really correct with your statement.

Tactically speaking, in a self defence situation, the blunt object next to you, perhaps a rock, wrench, bat, or stick will be your best option. Second to your ability to talk your way out of the situation, or run away from the situation. Or as mentioned, gun. But try slicing a tomato with a glock. ...my vote, go for the slicer endura. If you then yearn for a waved knive, mod it, or then just buy a second endura. You'll want to. They are that good.

a lot of pocket knives can be used as a decent impact weapon/pocket stick in the closed position

I would say get the ffg. My hand will tell you its excellent at stabbing. If you want to have it waved you can throw a zip tie or take a shot at a wave mod yourself. CM doesnt do wave mod work anymore, he came to an agreement that he wouldnt take any new wave jobs after the new year (2015) IIRC.

You should get the waved version. The wave is pretty damn nifty, and you'll probably never end up thinkin, "man, this grind is just too thick to be useful". Get the waved Endura, use it until it's dull, then send it off for a regrind.

I would recommend the ffg, the wave will eventually damage your pocket, and self defense with knife is not really recommended unless you're ready to be cut up too

Using a knife for self defense is a joke.

What you have to realize is that they are 2 totally different grinds, and that makes them totally different knives that just happen to be the same size.
The FFG is a better slicer, yet more fragile due to that Full height grind. It makes thins the area behind the edge.

The Waved Endura, is more of a tank. That saber grind leaves quite a bit of meat on the knife. It's a flat grind, but nowhere near as high as what is on the FFG.

If you are going to beat on it, get the Waved version.
If you want something more thin and slices better, the FFG is what you want.

If you are a "knife" guy you'll end up with both.
They are separate knives, same size of package.

Effective 1/1/15 Charlie Mike no longer does wave mods, per his agreement with Emerson:

I have both, the FFG and Saber grind; between the two, the Saber gets more time in my pocket, even than my Para 2. It's stronger feeling, easy to use, and still slices well. FFG does slice better with food and soft items, but just feels flimsy in my hand after carrying the Saber.

I have the waved Endura, I recommend you go that route over the FFG. No, it won't slice as well, but in a violent situation I have always worried that the FFG blade would snap if stabbed into somebody and then torqued hard side to side.

As for the people who say to get a gun, that's all well and good, I carry a gun every day myself, but I also carry a knife. I carry a knife for both backup defense and utility purposes. The Matriarch Emerson is a better overall SD tool, it really has no other purpose though and isn't practical or utility.

To the people who say to "run away" or "talk your way out of it"...that's all well and good, but often not practical when the situation warrants using a knife for protection. Ambush style attacks (robberies, rapes etc) are the most common types of violent assaults (outside of domestic violence) and often completely negate the ability to flee or even escape by compliance. Simply put, the attacker has often already decided they're going to harm you...the best you can do is protect yourself from harm and/or death.
