I just picked this one up today while running some errands. I had some time and found it in a gunshop. I can always use a new knife at work (who am I kidding, I can always use a new knife, period!
) and the price was reasonable so I grabbed it.
What can I say? Fit and finish are perfect. The knife opens smoothly and locks up vault tight with no vertical or horizontal blade play. I like the new blade shape (I've never owned an E4 before) aesthetically. The tip appears stronger than the E3. The knife shaved hair out of the box although I'll probably put a coarser edge on it before I actually work with it. The stainless handles feel pretty secure due to the shape and I like the added jimping on the spine behind the thumbhole. (especially because I didn't have to put them on myself. I'm crappy with a dremel.
)
I've always liked VG-10 and haven't used anything with it for a while so it will be good to see how it performs with the heavy duty rope used on the river.
The E4 came tip down, right hand carry and eventually I'll switch it to tip up but I'm in no hurry. I carry it clipped to my back right pocket at work and tip down is easier to draw and open from that carry position.
I'd like to maybe see some jimping on the underside of the handle and I prefer the old style pocket clip, but those are personal preferences that when I have the time and inclination, I can change myself (if i can find an old clip).
I'm happy to have an old favorite in my pocket again and bringing a new knife to test makes going back on the towboat for 21 days a little easier. It gives me something to look forward to.
I leave Wednesday but I'll try to find some stuff around here to cut up tonight and post more, and I will update my review next month when I get back.
