What is the distance between the end of the clip and the edge of the handle in tip up carry? Basically its the distance available to grasp the knife in the pocket in tip up carry. Can anyone measure please? The same measurement on the police 3 would be great as well.

I'm not sure I understand which specific you're looking for on the E4, but here's some measurements. Tip up: looking at the clip, from the top screw of the three clip mounting screws, the distance to the end of the handle is only about 1/4" - 3/8".

I have five Enduras, all of them situated for tip up carry. Once you've pulled it out a few times, it's second nature.

I hope that helps with the E4; I can't help with the Police, as I don't own one.

thx - cpr

For both the endura and the police this is the measurement I'm looking for.

Does anyone have a sypderco stretch they could do the same measurement with? I sold mine because I didn't think there was much room when I was handling it but I never actually measured.

Basically its the distance available to grasp the knife in the pocket in tip up carry.

When you put the E4 in you pocket using the clip you will get about 22mm (7/8") sticking up out of the pocket for you to grasp. I don't have the other knives, sorry.

I wasn't looking for the distance that the tip of the handle protruded from the pocket. I was looking for the space available to grip the handle of knife that was actually in your pocket, see the above pictures for the idea of what I mean.

Oops :foot: that's the first measurement I took, and on looking at the OP again, I re-interpreted your question as measuring the rear of the handle. (ie: how much handle is outside the pocket to grab.)

If I may ask, is there a physical impediment to how you would draw & deploy a pocketed, clipped knife like the E4? As in, a physical disability, heavy gloves, clothing that limits access to the pocket, etc.? I have mild arthritis in my back & upper shoulder, and at times no matter how a knife clip is situated, it's not too easy for me to draw/deploy.

Basically, of all of my clipped knives, the E4's have been some of the easiest to use. For me, it's more of an issue of bending the clip a little so it's a little easier to get the knife into use.

I'm now adding this to my knife log profile that I keep for each of my knives now; like you, I've sold and/or given away many knives, only to look back later and wonder about a measurement or detail.

No physical impediment or disability at all, I guess I've just been spoiled with my sog aegis which is really good in this specific measurement. When my aegis is in my pocket I can reach in and get my entire hand around it, I get about 90% of my fighting grip. I can put my thumb on the stud exactly the same way I would if I had just picked it up off the table to deploy it. I can feel almost the entire knife and get a great purchase on it. All I have to do to complete my fighting grip is wrap my fingers entirely around the handle, which is the max amount of grip available due to the very nature of the folding design, you can't get your whole grip until the blade comes out, unless you get an otf, which even then can experience different limitations of the same nature. When drawing the knife, due to sogs excellent clip design and placement, I get that excellent grip and I feel no "fabric pressure," meaning I dont feel my pocket pulling on the fingers while it is being pulled out of the clip during deployment. This pressure to me is very annoying because it can compromise that grip that I like so much by literally forcing your fingers off the handle. This is why I sold the spyderco stretch. I didn't feel the handle was long enough past the clip and I felt enormous pocket pressure during deployment. I also could not get the right grip and access to the deployment hole in the pocket. I mainly use my folders for tactical purpose, meaning I have my multitool in my back pocket if I need to cut a wire or whatnot. I want my folder to come out fast, which is why I'm seriously looking at doing my own custom waving, but being able to feel the stud/hole and maybe even deploy the knife before it fully leaves my pocket is a big attraction to me. Any knife that makes a gross demonstration of that, like in my opinion the spydie stretch, is gone pretty quickly. Does that answer your question at all?

Sounds to me like it's more of an issue of clip type [low rider] and position [tip up], rather than distance. (Just my opinion.) I like the Aegis too, low-rider clip & thumb stud that doesn't sit too high above the handle & snag. Most of my low-rider clipped knives have felt the same way. For me, the knife sits in a better position in the pocket, and my hand position on the handle is better when drawing the knife.

Hands down the best I've found in this area (for me) is the CRKT folding Razel with the little mini-clip.

I assume you mean "begins deploying . . . ". You might end up with an un-intended surgical procedure if a knife were to fully deploy before being drawn. ;)

I'm not sure any Spydercos will work, unless you find one with a low-rider clip like the Aegis, and can find one where the combination of features works for you.

I've looked through my 'tactical' knives, and only a couple come up that look like they might work, the Razel and an old S&W with low studs.

Good luck -

It does have a lot to do with clip style and carry position, I like low riding fold over clips and I won't buy any knives that do not carry tip up, but the distance is the defining factor once those two needs are meet. If there is no distance to grasp the knife past the clip in the direction shown in the above picture than for me the knife is basically ruined.

Not exactly sure what you mean, I'm simply saying that if I need to I like to be able to hit the thumbstud before the knife is even fully out of my pocket.
