I'm planning on buying an Endura 4....problem is I want the ZDP-189 steel and a saber ground blade... the websites I've found have one or the other. Not both in one blade. The only thing holding me back from buying a FFG (full flat ground) blade is the tip.. It looks too delicate.

Any experience with tip breakage on the Endura?

Also is VG-10 steel decent?

Thanks.

Unless you plan on doing some prying with it the tip shouldnt be a problem. Lately I have been prefering VG-10 over the ZDP as its super easy to maintain even if you run it totally dull. If run dull ZDP is a bit of a pain to get back to razor sharp since its such a hard steel. If you have the patience for it then ZDP is better and the FFG slices really great.

Mr. Turtle, I don't recall seeing any reports of Endura FFG tip breakage. Its possible to break anything, of course, but I can't recall even one such reported breakage. The Endura 3 tip was pointy, if you recall, and I once bought an older Delica with a broken tip, but the Endura 4 FFG tip seems pretty robust. I think you are fine with either saber or FFG, and in either steel. No worries.

I'm newer to owning/sharpening knives.... I can get my Benchmade rift to a Hair-popping edge easily with my Kansas stones (That's 154cm steel). My Ka-bar is much harder to sharpen... it's 1095 steel. How does that (1095) compare to ZDP? I suppose ZDP would be tedious to sharpen on Kansas stones...right? I'm thinking of just getting the VG-10 for it's sharpenability (I think I just made a new word).

Thanks

In my opinion, VG 10 will be much easier to maintain. As I type this, my VG 10 Endura is cutting my lunch. I am almost positive that ZDP-189 requires diamond stones to sharpen. Though I may be wrong.

I have an endura 4 ffg vg10, I think you'd be hard pressed to break the tip short of prying on it hard. I like vg10 holds a good edge and sharpens nicely. Sharpens easier than my paramilitary 2 s30v steel. I think vg10 is a great all round user steel.

The key to maintaining ZDP is not letting it get dull. You can let VG-10 get dull and easily bring it back, but that's considerably more difficult with ZDP. Regular touchups are the key. Even just simple stropping.
