i think i've read, by doing a search here, that the spyderco factory edge is equal to the 15 deg. per side that the 30 deg. setting on the sharpmaker does???

i am trying to confirm that i have read properly.

thanks all!

Most are in that general range, though I have had some as low as 12 per side and a couple very slightly over 15 per side. I think 15 per side is a guideline that they shoot for, and being hand sharpened there will be some variation. I also think they go more acute on certain models, as my Enduras have both been right around 15 per side, but my Manix, R2, and Native have all been around 12-13 per side. From what I have read they also go thinner on the ZDP models, but my Caly Jr. was reground to a high hollow grind before I measured the factory edge and my ZDP Jess Horn varied from maybe 12-13 per side to almost 20 per side near the tip. As long as the angle is under 15 it will sharpen up very quickly on the 30 degree Sharpmaker setting, but if it isn't you will want to do some reprofiling on a coarse stone to get the angle below 15 per side to ease your sharpening on the Sharpmaker.

thanks gunmike1.

i am looking to sharpen my endura 4 in vg-10 so the info that you have provided is right on the money.

I've had a Sharpmaker for years and had very good results with it. I've always been curious how to measure the angle at which the blade has been sharpened before I got my hands on it. Are you guys just eyeballing it, or do you have a guage?

Generally I use calipers to measure the thickness at the top of the edge bevel, then the length of the edge grind, and use trig to figure out the angle.
