When my Matriach arrived,it was in a great big shipping box with nothing but the small spyderco box inside. There was no paper or "peanuts" to keep the spyderco box inside from knocking around and causing unneccessary wear and tear on the Spyderco box.Not a big thing, but I do like my Spydie boxes to look new.Love the knife and the service was exellent otherwise.

I agree. I just got an Almite Walker packed the same way. Get some smaller boxes, and some bubble-wrap! Either that, or wrap the knives in Spyderco T-Shirts.

Ewok, I would like my Spydercos to be wrapped in a T-shirt - good idea!

My Matriarch came the same way (no damage). Little bitty box inside a very large box. When I heard a rattle inside my first thought was - NO it's damaged. But it wasn't. It was just that little bitty box loose inside that great big box.

Ditto... mine arrived the same way -- small boxes banging around in a larger one. As David said, it's no big deal but it did cause some unneccessary wear & tear on the Spyderco boxes.

In my case, I didn't receive a knife but I got 2 clips. They were placed in this thin cylindrical see-through plastic container (like a film cannister but longer), which was fine. But, the cannister came in this rather big envelope which was about the size of a regular sheet of paper (8.5 by 11). And I thought it was a bubble wrap envelope. It turned out to be one of those envelopes filled with old recycled, shredded newsprint and paper. What a mess that was for just 2 clips. But on the plus side it was sent promptly.

The Cricket I bought from the Outlet was sent the same way: huge box, no padding. Maybe the Outlet is trying to prevent wear and tear on the environment by not using styrofoam peanuts, which doesn't explain the wastefully huge box. Even if potential knife damage is not at issue, it still seems a bit weird.

Yeah, there's a Spyderco Factory Outlet (aka SFO, aka Ironstone), but you can't get in unless you know the secret word, and don't ask me what it is, because I'm not gonna tell you that it's 800-828-1925.

They've recently rewired the Spyderco website with "buy" buttons next to all the standard knives, but they don't list all the cool odds-and-ends (like spare clips) yet, so you just have to call and ask. Tell 'em Boris sent you, and you're here about the Moose and Squirrel.

Next week, the secret handshake...

I just received a box from SFO and everything was wrapped in a T Shirt and some peanuts, but was OK. I remember the little thin boxes that they used to send the slicers in and they were always recognizable when the UPS guy was whipping around the Mall were I work. Now who knows? Of course there is still the blue striped tape to give it away. Those little white boxes with the blue striped tape could be spotted from the food court half way down the mall.Maybe the big boxes are less expensive,I used to use the little white boxes to ship eye glasses and they were very expensive because they were less crushable.

Mine arrived in a big box with LOTS of shredded paper. Possibly the bigger boxes don't get lost as easily.

Gotta admit that I was a bit surprised when the UPS guy handed me this big box from SFO. My thought was that maybe they were just using up left-overs from Ironstone. Some packing material like shredded newspaper would have been good. A Spydie t-shirt would have been outstanding!

On the other hand, having worked for UPS in my ignorant youth (20 years ago) I'd have to say that a big box has a much better chance of reaching you than a little one; less likely to get lost or destroyed.

Same with me guys. Matriarch arrived yesterday little box in big box with no packing. No damage but if it had been a heavier item (say a Spyderench) I'm not sure it would have made it.

davidb415,

Doesn't everyone just THROW out their boxes anyway?! LMAO....I have a small pile if empty ones (mainly Spyderco). Seriously, David, if you want one of my empty Matriarch box you are welcome to it - send me an e-mail with your address

. I will use a BIG empty box to ship it in, BUT I will use some peanuts/bubble pack if it makes you happy...LOL.

The T-shirt they send me with the Matriarchs is WAY COOL!!

Thanks SFO!

Ray, You are just too kind!I like the idea of shipping in a T-shirt with maybe a Lum for additional ballast

This was not a big deal but it was noticeable enough to make note of it.Lord knows I have enough peanuts around from other transactions.

We're still sorting out the shipping procedures at SFO. Though SFO is in the same location as Ironstone, the crew is entirely new and still determining the best way to do things.

At little patience and they'll blow your socks off, good crew.

OK...top this. A computerless friend of mine (drexel on the forums) ordered a Matriarch. He received a huge box with a Spyderco catalog, price list and invoice. No packing material and NO KNIFE. Just think some of us were worried about the knife bouncing around in there, but at least there was one in the box. Needless to say....he is a little upset tonight.
