Spyderco Fixed Blade Sprint Run: It's High Time IMO

I know that many of you are like me and very much look forward to Spyderco's steady stream of Sprint Runs. There are so many that I dearly adore and my two main EDCs are both Sprint Runs i.e. the M390 Military and the C-60 Ayoob G-10 Sprint Run. It is as though they take a knife that is already a great model and even make it better the next go-around. However most all of Spyderco's Sprint Runs to date have been folders>> and don't get me wrong I'm not necessarily complaining about that because I love most of their classic folders.

But I got to thinking that it's really high time that Spyderco consider doing some Sprint Runs in some of their classic fixed blade models. My favorite Spyderco fixed blade of all time is my two TEMPERANCE 1 models ( PE & SE). It is one of the very few Spyderco fixed blades that they made available in SE & PE both. I own them both and use them both a lot and I'll probably never part with either one of my TEMP 1 models.

With that being said I would love to see a Sprint Run of the TEMPERANCE 1, FB05 model in one of the newer supersteels and possibly with a newer handle material. I was thinking about how cool it would be to have a TEMP 1 with a G-10 handle and a blade with either M390, XHP or maybe CTS-204P or something in that league of supersteels.

Now I know that many of you probably don't like my pick and I completely understand so I would like for you all to tell us which fixed blade Sprint Run you would like to see with which blade steel and handle material. There are now a lot of classic Spyderco fixed blades that if they modified them and made them with newer/better materials they would be awesome>> I'm sure of it. So which Spyderco fixed blade would you all like to see in a Sprint Run?

Well they did just do a Rock Salt sprint.

Yeah and I do appreciate you calling my attention to that. However I wasn't really emphasizing their specialty type models although yeah they should be considered as well. I was thinking in the genre of something maybe like a STREETBEAT or PERRIN model jazzed up in grand fashion. I would love to also see Spyderedged versions of some of the past, popular fixed blades. The original FB-05 TEMPERANCE 1 model that I made reference to would just be super cool in two different edge variants and maybe even with two different blade steels and/or a completely different handle material as well.

For a Specialty Spyderco knife I would love to see a Caspian Salt done with the new LC200N nitrogen based steel and maybe even a G-10 handle. Those are kind of examples of where my mind was going toward :D

Or maybe jazz up some of the older/discontinued culinary type knives that Spyderco did years ago. Just some thoughts to consider and to let you all know what direction my thoughts are going in.

Maybe the serrated ARK will be a sprint.

For me I would like a Spot and let's make it HAP40 with no cladding. That should have some legs.

Yeah those are both very interesting. Not only a Serrated/Spyderedged ARK model but I got at least 4 others that I believe would also do well with teeth.

The SPOT model in HAP 40? That would probably be a great blade steel to use. I've also been wondering how well a small fixed blade like the SPOT would be like with either XHP or CPM D2? But a SPOT in HAP 40 is interesting to say the least. I just don't for the life of me understand why there aren't more Spyderco fixed blades offered in SE. Because my TEMP 1 in Spyderedge is one of the most useful SE blades I've ever had. And I bet you're right that the ARK in SE would be a hit at the box office ;)

JD what is it about the Temperance that you prefer over the Temperance 2?

Well "Reject" I'm really glad you asked me that question>> For one thing I tend to like the blade length on the original TEMP 1 rather than the longer blade on the TEMP 2. Then there is the issue with the handle>> in other words the original TEMP 1 handle was as though it was actually tailor made for my hand>> it fits absolutely perfectly. The only thing I would change about the TEMP 1 handle is that I would prefer it in G-10>> but the FRN handle I can most certainly live with as nice as that knife works for me.

Also they never made a Spyderedged version of the TEMP 2 and they did make an SE version of the TEMP 1 and I use mine something fierce. OH don't get me wrong because if I ever score a great deal on a used TEMP 2 I'll probably end up getting one at some point. And I've handled a few TEMP 2 models but the weight of the TEMP 2 is another strike against it for what I've been using fixed blades for.

I guess to sum it up>> they had it 100% right to begin with. But I would sure be open to a more enhanced, G-10 handled version of the TEMP 1 with a Supersteel blade. If they would do a Sprint Run of the TEMP 1 like that it would probably be the one fixed blade I would use from here on out. Yes I like the TEMP 1 that much.

The best thing I like about the original Temperance is that I scored two of them.
Great all-purpose kitchen knives.

Already answered in your thread on the other forum, but the two I'd like to see are the Serrata and Temp2, both in modern high speed tool steel.

As for a smaller fixed blade knife, I'm very happy and content with my Mules.

I can appreciate that idea>> Because tool steels like D-2, O-1 and M-4 are really good dependable steels and I've used a fixed blade with D-2 and it is a great steel for hunting and/or outdoor type knives. I would love to see an original RONIN in a high grade tool steel and a STREETBEAT too.

Great all-purpose kitchen knives.

I will openly admit that I used both my PE & SE TEMPERANCE 1 models in the kitchen as well. Probably about 65% of what I use my TEMP 1 models for is usually in the kitchen or some type of food prep. Even when I used to have a big garden I packed my two TEMP 1 ( SE & PE) models in my garden tool kit for processing all kinds of garden vegetables.

But let's don't stop there because the TEMP 1 model is such a versatile fixed blade. I don't go anywhere on an outdoor outing like hunting, fishing, backpacking without my TEMP 1 models. I so much would like to see them do the original TEMP 1 models either in the H-1 Salt Series or in the other nitrogen based steel i.e. LC200N that they used in the TUSK model. It would make a very affordable multi-purpose set of outdoor fixed blades and would breathe new life in a super classic Spyderco model that I truly believe deserves another go-around.

Well , l would like to see a Serretta in D2. I wish Spyderco would use D2 more. I have a Sprint Military model in D2 and it is excellent in edge retention. D2 is also extremely easy to sharpen when using Silicon Carbide. And it has good rust resistance despite being tool steel. And the Serretta is a really beautiful model.

Yeah I like D-2 blades myself. But so far the best D-2 blade I've used was made with CPM-D2 which I'm pretty certain that the C-36 Sprint Run Military model you mentioned is indeed made with CPM-D2. Now I have a Spyderco Military model with CTS-XHP which from what I've been told is very close in alloy and performance to D-2 tool steel and I really like it>> it was up till that time my favorite C-36 Military model of all the Military models I owned until I got my hands on an M390 Military and so far it's been about my all time favorite EDC blade out of all the C-36 Military models I've ever owned. But I'm not about to get rid of my XHP Millie anytime soon and I've got my eyes out for one of those 204P units about to hit the market.

But getting back to D-2 tool steel. There is a custom knife maker named Bob Dozier and he has the title "Mr. D-2" because from what I'm told he does a vast percentage of everything he makes with D-2 tool steel. And he could use any blade steel he would want to use as successful as he is but he still prefers making most of his fixed blades and folders out of D-2>> I don't know what supplier he gets it from but I'm sure he is very particular with the sterling reputation he has.

Yeah D-2 tool steel has a huge fan base I can assure you. I have however heard that it is one very difficult steel to heat treat properly>> and I've heard that Bob Dozier is one of the best in that regard too.

Don't forget the SzaboHawk.

I am a huge fan of the Bill Moran blades from Spyderco, more specifically the upswept tip model. I honestly think that it would be an awesome platform for some CPM type or tool steels. Smaller, thin, slicey, light, etc... something like s110v, or s90v would work well in this configuration. Plus with the small amount of blade material, and FRN handle, they could possibly still be affordable as well.

If we're wishing...

I would love to see a sprint run Jumpmaster; lots of toothy Spyderedge goodness.

Hey glad you mentioned the Spyderco MORAN model  Yeah I've always liked the MORAN myself and I owned a couple of them before I got my very first TEMPERANCE 1 models. And because the TEMP 1 was such a great fixed blade in Spyderedge I still wonder how nice a MORAN model would be in Spyderedge as well. And being the MORAN has become literally a permanent icon model for Spyderco I've wondered why they don't at least do a Spyderedged Sprint Run of them. There is something special about Spyderco's serrated fixed blades.

And the MORAN model would also be great for a Sprint Run in one of the tool steels as well. I truly liked both the MORAN fixed blade variants >> now I obviously like the TEMPERANCE 1 models better for a lot of personal reasons but they were both excellent fixed blade models to be sure.

You've mentioned S110V and S90V but something tells me that a MORAN in either CPM D2 or M390 in both PE & SE would truly be the "creme de le creme" for a Spyderco Sprint Run fixed blade. Yeah I would get me another MORAN if they did something like that in a Sprint Run>> but I would also want a Spyderedged version too :thumbup: Also you raise the issue of "affordability">> which has always been one of the main reasons I always liked the TEMP 1 and MORAN models both.
