Hi all,

I recently joined a first aid and rescue squad. I was looking for a good Spyderco folding knife that would work well for a rescuer. I'm looking for either a full serrated or plain edge, although I don't know which of those would be more useful. I am also looking for a sheepsfoot blade so I don't accidentally poke anyone with the point. All other features are open to suggestions, and budget is not a real issue.

I was looking at the rescue, assist, and salt lineups. Before I pull the trigger, I thought I might get some outside input. Is there a favorite Spyderco knife out there for those of you who are in this line of work?

Thanks so much.

I would go for the Rescue, it rides better in the pocket, and you won't be short of window-breaking gear. Serrated will likely be the most resistant to abuse, and will keep cutting. While it will take some work to knock the edge off a regular spyderco, you don't really need it to be delicate. A plain edged dragonfly would work for any delicate work you might need to do.

In general your shears are going to be a better, safer bet most of the time, but if you are like most rescue folks, that whole "what if" is hard to resist! And as you gain more experience you will get a better idea of what you need, but it helps to have gear that you are used to. I mean, its hard to blow a tire with shears.

What sort of crew is it? On-site response, fire-rescue, high angle, SAR?

Maybe an Assist with a G-10 Robin or a Dragonfly for an excellent little plain edge?

The Robins are available for ~$25, you should grab one.

If you're going serrated, then I would recommend that you opt for one of the H-1 sheepsfoot blades, because serrated H-1 holds its edge better than other serrated edges in other steels. Assist Salt, if you want a totally blunt "safety" tip, otherwise go for either the Atlantic Salt or Saver Salt, unless you can carry an auto, in which case you might consider the Autonomy.

if i was a EMT person i would carry the native with serrated edge!mostly because of its small size, but it gets the job done with rope seat-belts ect.and it seems it was in use by the armed forces at one time.

Spyderco Assist Salt with rust-proof H-1 steel.

3.7" blade, partially serrated and blunt tip. Weighs just 3.9 ounces. Easy one-handed opening. Includes rope cutter, glass breaker and whistle.

The tip on the Pac Salt is not exactly pointy but not a sheep's foot either and I would consider it the best of both world
