Spyderco for self defense and heavier cutting?

Hi!

I am a Spyderco fan (well...I have a Native...) and was looking for something with a little more "stoutness" in the handle. I'm looking at the Native II or the Endura II. My question: Would the stainless handle be wise for SD and harder cutting chores, mainly for SD? They seem too slipperry, especially when you add a little sweat into the picture. Any other Spydies you reccomend?

Thanks!:)

If you want a Spyderco for heavy cutting and self defense I would take a look at the Chinook.

I agree with Dennis...If you are looking for a ball-busting STOUT Spydie, look no further than the Chinook!...That monster looks like it can cut the rest of the Spydies in-half!.:).

Make that two who agree!

The Chinook is one tough Hombre!
It's the only knife that my wife said was too big. Funny, she didn't say that about my 18" HI khukri!

The CPM440V Military would be my recommendation if your primary focus is defensive use. It's a well built knife with a comfortable handle and aggressive blade design.

If you don't want a heavy Chinook, I would recommend a G10 Police or Rookie. They might be hard to find, but they are out there. The lil' Temperence is made for SD. Good Luck. Don't forget you need 2. A left side and right side blade.

Like Dennis and others, I recommend the Chinook. It is just about the healthiest looking Spydie going and the James Keating design is maximized for use as a self-defense item. The tip, if you look at it, is well designed for his famous back-cuts and I just cannot see the blade closing on you while you do it. And I don't find it all that big and heavy to carry in my waistband. Of course, I have a large frame with which to carry it.

If you do find it too big and heavy, try to find a StarMate as an alternate. I think that you would have to look an awfully long way to beat this knife, even if Spyderco has mistakenly discontinued it.

Pure self defense Spydies?
Here are my favorites in order:
1. Chinook
2. Ayoob (after applying traction tape to the handles)
3. Military
4. Starmate
5. G-10 Police
Other heavy hitters from Spyderco I do not have but look like they are worth looking into are the Lil' Temperance and the Gunting.

Stainless steel handled models should only be used in a SD capacity after applying traction tape to the handles to prevent any slippage accidents. It would totally SUCK to be fighting for your life and have your hand slide up onto a scary sharp blade and sever a couple of veins, tendons, nerves, whole fingers, etc...etc....

As to SS handles, I recently roughed up the handle of my SS Dragonfly. Basically, I scratched up the left-hand scale a lot, using a thin file that resembles a nail file. The scratches go from top to bottom of the scale, as oppossed to front-to-back. I initially was planning to file grooves into the handle, but in the end I just scratched the handle up. The result, while not pretty, works to increase traction, and the appearance is fine to me. Looking at my Dragonfly right now, I think I'll do the right-hand side of the handle as well, first taking off the clip.
The SS used in the Dragonfly's handle is soft and scratches readily. One should also be able to file grooves into a SS handle without too much difficulty, if you're into that sort of thing.

I switched from a BM Stryker to a SP Rescue full size serrated for my own particular reasons, but not a bad choice after all. And the cutting power is HUGE!

You might wanna read this post in the T&T board :)

Take care

Someone posted some pics awhile back of a stainless handled Spydie they had checked. Looked pretty good and was supposed to have improved traction.

here is a link w/ some pics:

I would go with the Lil' Temperance, followed very closely by the Chinook. I think that they both have their place, but for a 3" folder, you cannot beat the Lil T.

I am going to pick the Lil' Temperance, as well, as the best Spydie for self defense and heavier cutting. A very close second would be the Chinook, IMHO. The lockback on the Chinook is very stout and sturdy, but the Compression Lock on the Lil' T is AWESOME. :D

Has anyone mentioned the Chinook yet? ;)

That would be my pick as well.

Almost a majority for the chinook. I would highly recommend the military as a good second choice.

If you are intrested, there are several g-10 and ss rookies for trade and for sale at the exchange board as well. Also a serrated standard which is resembles the delica for sale.

The Chinook is certainly a heavy fistfull of solid knife- maybe too heavy for some. See if you can find a Wegner- they've been discontinued :( but you can still find them here & there. Excellent knife.

Don't forget about the Chinook!

...and the Gunting, and the Ayoob, and the Lil Temperance...
