Spyderco Forgeries

Hello,

Recently I picked up an Ambitious. It is my first Spyderco. Inspired, I decided to purchase a Paramilitary 2. Having done a bit of research, it appears as though forgeries are somewhat rampant for this and other Spyderco knives.

One of the supposed tell-tale signs of a forgery is the shape of the Spider emblem on the box, having a larger triangle without much of a fang in the middle as my Ambitious box has:

Also, another indication of a forgery is the Spyderco emblem not appearing to be super etched on the blade, again like my Ambitious:

Another indication of a forgery is the barcode on the box having a slight gap in between the number and the barcode (apparently genuine Spyderco boxes don't have a gap):

Another is G10 that doesn't really feel all that grippy and (at least for the Paramilitary 2) the gimping should be rear-facing, almost saw like:

Again I'm not sure about the gimping, could be different for different models of Spydercos. But after doing research about the Paramilitary (which I don't have yet), it made me look at my Ambitious and decided to ask here if I potentially have a forged Ambitious.

Thoughts?

I don't think they fake chinese spyderco. They make them.

True, and at that price point they would probably be losing money. They want to make counterfeits of the higher dollar stuff, not the base, entry level economy line. Your deductions are not exactly concrete or prove (disprove) anything, that is hardly a counterfeit knife.

It makes me wonder though, if those previous identifying characteristics of fakes are also present in the Genuine (just the box actually), then I can't trust ANY box I get the Para 2 in basically and need to go off of the machine work etc.

Barcodes and boxes mean nothing. I got 2 that have no papers either.

There are some knives you can buy at gun shows, on eBay, and from Amazon without worry, and then there are some that it's close to foolhardy to buy from anyone but a reputable dealer, even if that means paying a bit more. The ParaMilitary 2 is definitely one of those knives.

As for those boxes, I have boxes with one or more of the "telltales" you mentioned from Spydercos that are not known to have been counterfeited and that were purchased from reputable dealers . The only thing that strikes me odd about your Ambitious box is the lack of a date code. Guess it could just be a slip up by whoever was running the label machine that day, but I have somewhere around 100 of the red/black boxes here, and not a single one of them lacks a two letter date code.

I believe your Ambitious is real.Buying from a Bladeforums dealer in the future would be you're best bet. Enjoy your new knife.

Yeah the G10 feel between those two knives, the etching, and the jimping aren't really anything alike in the first place. I briefly had a Persistence I acquired in a trade many moons ago, technically my first Spyderco, and when I held a PM2 for the first time realized they're nothing alike.
