Spyderco Goldenstone, Duckfoot and 701 Profiles?

I just tried to get some answers over at the Spyderco sub-forum and no one seemed to be up on sharpening equipment over there so I came over year to see if any of you all have any experience with some of Spyderco's great new Sharpening Tools as well as some of their older more established sharpening tools as well.

Just this year I've aquired quite a few new Sharpening tools. I've gotten the Spyderco Goldenstone, Spyderco Duckfoot and I've also aquired many other great sharpening tools of theirs as well.

I'm finding it kind of frustrating because even the great folks at Spyderco don't have much information to share on the Goldenstone and Duckfoot in particular. I'm not even finding many people that have much experience with the Spyderco 701 Profiles even though that sharpening tool has been around for years now.

I'm just hoping that some of you guys have done some work with these great tools and might have some great information to share.

OK I'm going to give this one last bump just in case some of the regular Spyderheads that normally frequent this place overlooked this thread. As long as these most recent Spyderco sharpening devices have been available I just find it a bit too strange that absolutely no one knows anything about these 3 great sharpening tools.

Also I'm going to add Spyderco's great Slipstone in with them as well. I was just playing with my Spyderco slipstone last night and I couldn't believe how great of a touchup I did on my H-1 Spyderhawk with just that one tool.

Spyderco's sharpening tools truly are hidden treasures in the sector of sharpening tools because there isn't anything else like them out there that I can find. I do know that there have been several Duckfoot tools sold but you still don't hear much about them either. It's sort of spooky in a way that people are buying these Spyderco sharpening tools but won't talk about them

my set of 701 should be on my way soon, i'll give you my impressions.

could you clarify what your looking for ? reviews, impressions or tips and tricks ?

Can I ask where you found a 701 set at? I have been looking for one.

I have an old set of 701 Profiles and are very useful, however I understand that the ones they sell now are different. I might be wrong, mine are old.

Knifecenter carries these. They're a BF member dealer, so here are links to knifecenter's listings (for separate medium and fine files; didn't find a listing for a set):

These are different than the one I have, actually they look very similar to the Sharpmaker rods. The old 701 came in a set of 2 a medium (brown) and a fine (white) both in a leather double sleeve. They are wider thaan the Sharpmaker rods and one the edges is rounded. I'll try to post pics from home.

The ones I linked also have a rounded edge (two, actually, each of different radius), and are also wider (3/4") than the Sharpmaker rods (1/2"), according to the description in knifecenter's listing:

"701M stones are made of High Alumina Ceramic. This medium grit (brown) stone sharpens very dull edges. This stone is used dry without oil or water lubrication making it convenient and mess-free. Elliptical in shape, the Outdoor Profile stone has four distinct sharpening surfaces suitable for plain and serrated edges, shop tools and household items. It provides: A flat surface and large radius for PlainEdges, a small radius for SpyderEdges and a groove running the length of the stones for sharpening pointed objects like fishhooks, awls and darts.

"Specifications
Medium Grit
Stone Size 3/4" x 8" x 1/4"
Leather Sheath
Made in the USA"

I'm assuming the cross-sectional shape is sort of an elongated teardrop, like a slipstone, as opposed to triangular, like the Sharpmaker rods. The stock photo for the listing is kind of misleading, in that it only shows it 2-dimensionally, and doesn't reveal the cross-section. On that one visible face, it does look like the SM rods, especially with the lengthwise groove on it (maybe that's a new addition to these?). I do seem to remember seeing these sold as a set in the leather slipcase a few years ago, as you mentioned.

I am looking for the set that comes in a double case and not the individual ones. That adds up to more money! I have to wonder why Spyderco discontinued the set 701MF?

A while back, somebody else had also wondered why Spyderco wasn't selling the Sharpmaker rods in pairs anymore (they're sold singly now). One possible explanation was that they get lots of requests for single rods, to replace those that occasionally get dropped & broken/chipped. Same 'logic' might apply to these now. From a replacement perspective, it sort of makes sense, though it wouldn't surprise me if it's a little more profitable for them too. ;)

This is a pic from Spyderco's own site, apparently of the old 2-file set & slipcase (701MF). It's currently listed as 'DISCONTINUED' on their site:
