Spyderco grind angles

I would assume that Spyderco grinds match those (40) of the Sharpmaker. Is this too much of an assumption? I know this has been brought up before, but I'm having no luck with the search function.:)

Yeah, my Manix is set to 40. I sharpen at 30 though to get a micro bevel because it would just take me too long to get a sharp edge at 40. This is because you would be sharpening the ENTIRE bevel instead of just the edge. At some point I will go back and touch up on the 40 side, but still do the sharpening at 30.

You have that backwards, as 30 is more acute than 40, so you would use the 40 degree setting for the edge or "microbevel", and the 30 as a backbevel. In the case of my Manix, which was around 24 degrees inclusive, both settings would provide microbevels on the factory edge. All of my Spydercos have been between 24 and 30 degrees inclusive, though it will vary due to the knives being hand sharpened at the factory. Generally 40 degrees will give you a microbevel on a factory Spyderco edge, but you may get one that is acute enough that 30 degrees inclusive will give you a microbevel. Others have complained about their Delicas being over 20 per side, so if your knife isn't getting sharp you may want to do the magic marker test to verify that you are hitting all the way to the edge when you sharpen. Whatever the factory bevel is I always reprofile more acute, and you may want to consider reprofiling to 12 degrees per side or less so the 30 degree setting would give you quick and easy microbevels.

Yeah your right..I did do that backwards. Oh well...I did post at 5:30 a.m. though! :-)

I just sharpen mine with 30 inclusive, no 40 degree microbevel.

Using my Sharpmaker I plan to sharpen at 30 degree's.

I was wondering who set the 40 degree angle as the optimum cutting edge? Not every blade is best served with that angle.

Out of pure stubbornness I'm re-profiling my BK-11 to 30 on the Sharpmaker. It's taking a long time, but I think it's worth the effort.:)

What's the best/quickest way to reprofile an edge? I've spent an hour on the sharpmaker with the diamond bars to try and get edges where I want them. This is way too long for someone as impatient as myself. Do I need to get a 1" belt sander with a light grit belt? I know it's more likely I will damage the blade, but I figure with a little care I'd be alright. Any other suggestions.
