I'll soon be in receipt of one of these in P&S ( combo edge ); What
is the opinion(s) of you forumite(s)
regarding this baby?( I know, I know, it's "ugly" as "home made sin".) But whaddya gonna do?

I've had a plain edge Gunting for about 6 months. I'm still not sure if I like it. The lock seems strong. The steel is good. I like the handle. I wish the blade was longer. It is very unique looking. I just use mine for everyday cutting and carry. If I was going to use it for defence I would take the necessary training to take advantage of it's special design features. Spyderco makes a training version which shows me they are serious about the defensive uses. I think it's a well made knife.

I think that the Gunting is an interesting design, and is very well made. However, I don't like the idea of a defensive knife having a sub 3-inch blade (2&7/8)...I think that 4-4&1/2 inches would have been "better". Also, be aware that it DOES take training to utilize the Gunting's full potential.

Will do guys! I know what'cha mean about the blade ; the two I sent to
Samo & Voxnaes repectively were a bit "shy" in regards to the blade.
My C29SBK "Cricket" actually put the
Gunting(s) to shame. glockmann, I agree that something along the lines of your G-10 Police SE might have been a "better mousetrap" but I notice the folks at Spyderco are rather "dense" when it comes to REAL
consumer input ; but sometimes it's like "pissing in the wind" with them! They talk about "legal issues"
and then come out with the "Spyderfly" ( a butterfly knife!).
Go figure. Input/feedback warmly appreciated & accepted!

I handled one at a gun show last year and it was a very cool Spydie, although rather a little ugly. ;) (The only reason that I didn't get it was because I found a green Lum Chinese and just had to get that instead.) However, it has the "good" kind of ugly.

I'm sure that you'll agree with me, Allen, that Spyderco knives are designed as high performance cutting tools, not as knives that are 'pretty'. The Gunting is no exception by any means, and serves its' purpose as a MBC knife very well, IMO. Although the blade is only <3", there isn't a place on the human body where cutting with these <3" wouldn't be effective. ;) As Dann mentioned though, it takes some training for the full offensive/defensive potential of the Gunting to be unleashed.

Just my .02 :D

Hear, hear...

I think it´s one of the sturdiest knives I´ve owned or fondled(Civilian, Matriarch, L-UDT, some CRKT:s, Delica, Commander etc. and the Buck Strider, yes Buck STRIDER).

The Gunting would be perfect if only Strider would take and get a license of making a FOUR inch bladed Gunting in the same spirit as the AR/GB.

The Gunting and my GB together with my Perrin FB are in my EDC rotation.

The Gunting is like a Sig. A Gunting made by Strider would probably be like a Glock. FUGLY is the word.

Just one other note on the Gunting other than the blade being a bit on the shorter side, buy a sheath for it. I carry it in the outermost pocket in a jacket. Any other way is a pain. I´ve tried but in the end too many factors worked against carrying it any other way.

I agree with you & glockmen/Dann
wholeheartedly ; I have one of the brochure(s) Michael Janich sent me
regarding his classes ; problem(s)
are : a.) "Mammon" shortage & b.) transportation which couples with a.) above. The most my Gunting will probably amount to is "drawer dressing";) ; just sittin' in the "collection", whilst the C29SBK cricket, C08SBK "Merlin" & SE Jester
"hold the line".. Kinda sad really,
to invest all that "mammon" into a fine MBC blade, only to end up "on display". Time to "re-examine" myself, I think.

Heard rumors of a Strider Gunting. Don't know if its supposed to be a folder or fixed though. Either way, can't wait! :D

I've had a Gunting for a little over a year, and I just love it! It cuts well, and I like having the big handle, without having a ridiculously big blade (that's what my Chinook is for);) . It opens incredibly smoothly, and I actually think it looks pretty cool, like something out of a sci-fi movie.
My only problems are: I don't like the lock, though it's rock solid, because it's pinched my hand a couple of times. Also, it sits really high in the pocket, which make it quite visible and the ramp on the back of the blade is a pain in the ass when fishing around for change.
Basically, I can see why some people don't like the Gunting, but It's one of my favorite folders.

I finally sold mine, Two main things I didn't like about it at all...

1) I didn't like the way it opens up while in my pocket and especially if I tried to retrieve something from that pocket...VERY hard to get your hand out without your hand brushing the ramp and opening the blade....Ouch!

2) Almost impossible to open using the spyderco drop method, the handle hits the fingers as its just midway open. Any other of my Spydercos its very easy to just pinch the hole and drop.

Its a good design for what it is intended for, just not for me.

The Gunting can be very dangerous to carry in many cities. Many places have a law against concealed weapon carry, leaving the definition of weapon somewhat flexible and dependent upon the intent. For example, a pocket knife in your pocekt is OK, but in your pocket for "defense" makes it a concealed weapon...and its a felony.

No bones about it, the Gunting is a weapon and it's marketed that way. Yeah it can be "utility" but its got way too many other weapons features for that it to pass muster as a utility knife. Depending upon your local laws, any bull-cop, mall, town, city, or state, could arrest you for weapons carry just by identifying it as a Gunting in your pocket. Make sure you know your local laws before carrying it. Don't forget, crossing state or town line can change things too and letting your shirt cover it while it's in your jeans can be considered concealment.

I concur ; I live in the wretched State of Florida that allow(s) "open carry" of a "common pocketknife". The Gunting isn't exactly "common" by ANY mean(s). This applies also to
the Civilian. I will carry neither of these, as they will remain "drawer dressing"; I'll stick with my Cricket, Merlin & Jester ( around
my neck on a bead chain ). Florida
"law" doesn't mandate how many knive(s) a person may carry upon their person "openly";) but there is
ALWAYS the question of "intent":(
Thus my P&S Gunting will end up
"drawer music";)

Guro Bram(the designer of the Gunting) lives in Florida. My guess is that it's legal to carry there...and what are you complaining about? You all can carry ASP batons, get CCW permits for guns easily, etc. Consider yourself lucky to be in one of those states(TX and AZ too) that isn't anti self-defense.

CCW permit(s) are by NO MEANS easy to obtain in Florida! They are also
EXPENSIVE ($117 PLUS $5 fingerprinting fee(s)) and have a 90 day "waiting period" ( as opposed to Connecticut that has a 30 day period)As for Bram Frank, so what if he was born & raised in Florida?
Oh, yeah, the cops are gonna grant
one "leniency" just like they would
if you were carrying a Microtech UDT
( auto) made by the Marfione couple
( Native Floridian(s) BTW ) The "laws" seem "sensible" to the "outsider"; but the grass is ALWAYS
greener on the other side of the pasture, right?
