I recently won a beautiful set of Spyderco Guntings (live blade and red handled trainer). They look like they were never used. I am not even sure what to do with this set. Does the system really work? Are these any good. The don't seem very comfortable to hold. The live blade is scary sharp. The videos are $100. I don't know if it is worth investing in them. Any opinions?

I am new here (see intro forum) thanks for letting me in here. I appreciate what great place everyone has made it.

First off it is a knife and it can be used like any other. Bram Frank is a good solid teacher with lots of martial wisdom to impart.

He is also controversial figure around here. some love him and some hate him. I am indifferent to either side. He is as good as any other knife guy mentioned on these boards.

My personal opinion about the gunting is that the thumb ramp is TOO LARGE! for daily carry.

If you have an interest in Knife work it would be worth it to purchase the videos. You got $200-300. worth of free knives. What is a hundred bucks compared to that?

won, as in won, or as in bought off of ebay?

I had the videos, pretty good info, but you could wing it if you have some MA or control/restraint training.

Lucky you. The system works, they are very specialized design. Check out www.CSSDSC.com; Bram's home site.

I EDCed a Gunting as a utility folder as it had a 3" blade and it was extremely comfprtable for my arthritic hands. That was until 9/11 when I found that it was just too awkward to continue to carry and use such a knife for that purpose. itt wporked very well as a utility folder, however. It is just that its appearance scared Hell out of people.

No not won on ebay. Not won at an auction. It was a raffle.

Most of the time, when a martial artist/combatives professional designs a knife, inevitably it is designed to maximze his specific fighting style or approach to edged-weapons (e.g. - Southnarc: Disciple, Kelly Worden: Wortac, etc.) As a practitioner of FMA myself, I also appreciate the design features on the Gunting. I also suggest learning from Bram Frank himself to make use of it fully. It does lean more to being a specialized knife rather than an all-arounder.

I don't think anyone has mentioned, and you can already probably tell for yourself, but this knife is ridiculously tough!

It has full steel liners, that aren't hollowed for weight reduction. The compression lock is also extremely tough. This coupled with the stout blade make for an indestructable knife, which is important considering its applications. If you do use it for basic chores, you should have no worries of it ever failing on you. I think the blade/handle ratio also makes it very stable for any cutting task you could throw at it.

imho the only cons of the gunting is that the long horn will catch on your hand and other things and start opening up in your pocket, the gunting is only suitable for pocket carry if the pivot is TIGHT, if not get a skunkworks sheath (or something similar) and carry on your belt.

of course without the training its just another short bladed knife, its got some options built into it but if ya dont know how to use them..........

You might want to edit out the semi-colon from your link, it didn't work when I clicked on it, but did when I deleted the semi-colon.
Cool site, by the way:thumbup:
