Hey, I haven't bought a spyderco knife, because I generally don't like the look of them, but I may have changed my mind. I see endless good reviews and thought it might be time. I have been looking at all of the sydercos, and I think I have narrowed it down to the Chinook and the Viele. Can you all give me some reviews of these two knives and some pros and cons. Which would you pick, and why? Thanks in advance!!!!

newknifeguy, except for their approximate blade length and that their color is nominally black, I can't imagine how these two knives can be related in your choice.

Viele - smooth micarta scales, linerlock, drop point, small opening hole. VG-10 stainless steel. This knife is a pure cutter, with no fore or aft gripping ability. Considered by many to be the sleekest high-end gent's folder in the Spyderco line and often used as an everyday carry (EDC).

Chinook - heavy, massive lockback, textured G-10 scales, upswept clip point bowie knife. Designed as both a fighting knife and a hunting/camping knife. CPM440V steel.

If you haven't had the chance to handle them, get thee to a decent knife shop where hopefully, you will be able to handle both.

I own a Viele and have really enjoyed it. The only things I don't like about are (1) blade is really pointy, and I'm bad about breaking points (dropping while open), and (2) you can't take it apart to clean. Don't think you can the Chinook, either, or any other Spyderco I've looked at (I can't imagine in this day at least one of their collaboative knives can't be taken down).

The Viele is beautiful, tight, and a joy to use. Just keep it clean after each heavy use and you should be okay. Don't know/own the Chinook.

The Viele would maka a better everyday user, the
Chinook is just to big to carry everyday, and it
weighs a ton. The viele is a classy little blade.
