Greetings all, I recently received my Nov '06 (yep, it's August 1st... ) issue of Tactical Knives. Lo and behold, on the cover are two gorgeous Spyderco fixed blades of a Hossom design called the Chainsaw. Unfortunately, instead of a nice long article on this knife, they chose to talk about it in one of those little "blurb boxes" that accompanies a related story. :jerkit:

Near as I can tell, it's produced by Fox in Italy. The blades offered so far are an 8" and a 9", with four blade sizes planned. The steel is N690Co stainless, which according to the article is similar to BG-42. So far, these are just prototypes and probably not out yet.

I am SO looking forward to this blade coming out. I don't know anything at all about the steel, but would have liked to see it in something like 3V instead, or possibly A2. I'm sure Spyderco will make sure it works as hoped. I did a search over at BF's spyderco forum, and didn't find too much about it, which surprised me. Does anyone know anything about this model yet? Price? When available?

only know what i read in TK and that as ya know wasnt much, darned nice knife though imho, might have to get one of them if they arent too proud of them.

just like TK to have them on the cover and then about 3 paragraphs about it lol. was looking at a article about the MOD crucible, was wondering "how long is the blade on this sucker" and looked and looked, the writer didnt bother to put the blade length in the article, thats a pretty important thing to omit imho, i mean 3-4 pages of stuff and he doesnt state the length of the blade??

TK is my fav knife mag though FWIW.

Those are some nice looking fixed blade knives. Instead of rushing off to get another edition out, "Tactical Knives" should slow down and spend more time providing detail and comments on the various knives they showcase.

Isn't that the steel type used in the becker line of knives? If it is thats good stuff!

Looks like and upgraded kershaw outcast to me which is cool cause i really didn't like the outcast.

N690 is the Austrian steel used in the Extrema Ratio knives, also in the Italian-made Ontario Hossom-designed Retribution folders.

If those feel as good in the hand as they look, I'm headed for the doghouse again!

You can read what Jerry Hossom has to say about the collaboration in his forum on KnifeForums http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/765066/

I'm looking forward to this one

Thanks for the link David, I don't usually peruse ALL of KF and I missed that. It kinda makes the wait till Christmas '06 almost unbearable! I've been a Hossom fan ever since I FIRST saw one of his blades. I figured I'd probably never get to own a real Hossom, and this is a pretty good substitute. I wonder what the fourth blade length will be... the article said 9", 8", 5.5" and no mention of #4. Be nice if it were about 10.5-11":D More likely a 6.5 -7" blade.

I'm with you. Love the Hossom designs but could never afford the custom price :o Since I already have a number of Spyderco knives, adding this to the collection is a "no-brainer"!

Here is the latest from Spyderco:

Hello,
Just a newbie here. At our local sporting goods shop they have a spyderco woodlander. Looking online they now list between 185-250. This one is on clearance, they said discontinued for 115. Am I an idiot if I pass it up?? Like the look of the knife. Little big for reaching in the pelvic of a deer, but I have others for that. Anyone have Any practical experience with N690Co and or the Woodlander??? Thanks

lol, thats what I've come to find out, was over 2x that then they said it was discnt'd and dropped in half then 10 bucks more off, getting nervous that it might not be there tomorrow/

That knife has not been discontinued. Your dealer made a mistake, and I suggest that you go in and buy it ASAP. You'll love it. Also, if they have any extras, you should be able to buy them and sell them to others on EBAY/here/etc at a decent profit (and a discount from normal sales price for your buyers).

I was the first one in the next morning. Picked up the Woodlander at a great price. Since it's a chain store, but a newly opened location, I notice that they get a bunch of items and only restock the 'hot sellers', I think that is what they meant by discont'd, I think by them, bummer too, they stocked all kinds of cool knives and seem to be widdling their inventory down to a only a few.

I went hunting the next day, got a deer, the knife was a bit big for the task, though in a pinch I could get by. After the day I drove home and voila, no knife. Dang!!!! I went back with flashlight in hand and rechecked a spot where I did a long spot and stock/crawl and there it was! Whew!!!! One day w/ a knife like that would be a heartbreak, Lost the belt though it was hooked on.... good riddance! LOL
