Hey guys, I am presently looking for large duty bush/survival knife.Along with the odvious choices RAT,Ranger and the rest, I found an interesting offering from Spyderco. The Spyderco Hossem Forester. It looks real good. Made in Italy from a fancy strain of stainless steel. Is any one familier with this blade? How thick is it? Is it a good chopper? Any thing one can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have one and it's a good blade but it's a recurve...:( It's 3/16" thick and a fairly good chopper. With that said it's ordinary compared to my Browning Crowel/Barker or my BK-9 and they are cheaper too...:)

Treg makes some valid points.

I use my Browning Crowel/Barker more than my Forester. I've come to really like the Browning.

All of the Hossem knives are pretty big, with handles for BIG hands.

I have all of the Spyderco Hossem fixed blades with the exception of the smallest and find them serviceable but not my choice for regular use and carry. When I used them they were fine, I just found I'd rather carry something else for some reason. I suspect it was simply the handle size being just enough "off" that makes it so.

I love mine ! .. great knife , BIG knife !!! and you can get it cheap ,they discontinued .
only thing I don't like is sheath , it is to wide , I will make leather one myself.
honestly I like it more then my Strider or TOPS .

If you want one get it now before they all sell out. They will never be less expensive than they are right now.

Interesting thread as I have been wondering about this knife, especially since it has been reduced in price at many dealers. I have a few choppers already including a battleRat and a Battle Mistress but the Forester certainly has a unique design. Obviously it didn't quite catch on with the majority of knife users.

My .02 is the reason for it not being a popular knife is the cost...you could find a better knife for what you would pay for the Spyderco. Now that the price is reduced it's a good deal

I have been looking to pick up one of these but honestly the RAT is the same price with a way better warranty. Warranty means a lot when buying/using an outdoors knife that will take a lot of abuse.

I wonder about that. Spyderco is well known for its warranty and standing by their products.

Spyderco isn't known for neglecting their end users.

Besides, how often do you need to use the warranty? I've never broken a knife.

Thanks guys for the replys.A few of you mentioned a considerable price drop.Could someone tell me were is best place to buy from.Im in Canada, great country, but it sucks if you are into blades, governments laws, elevated prices, and lack of selection, all a reason to say it sucks.

I'm in Canada too and I get all the knives that I want without any problems and at a reasonable price...check out Warriors ans Wonders. Jay is the best in Canada with the lowest prices, btw he just had a sale and the Forester was at $139.00 cnd. Also check out e-bay, a lot of them ship to Canada but always use USPS if you want to avoid excessive customs fees...:) Cheers!!!

I scored one for $103 off ______ warehouse that was new in the box, but had a scratch on the blade. It was the only one, so not "deal" spotting. Not sure if it was dropped, sheath action or what, edge looks great and I got if for $103 - with free shipping. :D

Initial thought, what the heck were they thinking with the grip screws????? :jerkit: Really, why have this well finished knife with speed bumps? No matter how you hold it, feels like you're reading brail. Sheath seems like the current plastic service issue fair. I'm not a fan, but it does its job. Would love to have a sweet leather pair of pants for her. If she sticks around, that's what she'll get.

Other than that - man what a great looking knife. Love the feel - less speed bumps - and weight of it. Will address the screws and put her to use. For the $130ish I've seen them on sale for - seems like a steal.

Peace.

Milton

nice knife but I don't like the longish handle or the recurve in a chopper. It does look good. I'm leaning more to the Browning-Crowell.
