I have been using knives for decades but only recently have come to enjoy collecting them as a hobby.
Most of my fixed blades are customs and most of my folders are Benchmades.
Though I will always be a Benchmade fan I am realizing there are many other great designs that should not be ignored.
After studying the forum posts and meeting Sal and his impressive crew at Blade it is time to close the Spyder hole in my collection.

I am looking for a tough utility EDC that can be pressed into a self defense role if ever needed. What would you suggest?

WEll "katsu" I think the knife you long for with those qualifications would be the Yojimbo. Although a stainless handled Rescue would be mighty fine for that. Actually the Manix is another one that come to mind as far as utility use goes. ONe more that just recently caught my fancy as far as utility and self defense combined would be the G-10 handled C-50 Centofante II in a serrated blade. I got one on a BF trade and I just love it. Hope that helps:)

Paramilitary would be my vote. Hands down.

Good tips I'll look them up.
I am leaning towards the Paramilitary because I prefer flay grinds and don't like FRN.

Does anyone know the Spyderco designer who was in the booth at the Blade show with Sal and Eric?
I spent an hour talking to him and can't remember his name but he taught me much.

The Pmilie is a good choice.
I find that it gives not only good grips for utility work but it also gives a great hammer grip and an AWSOME saber grip for defense.

Think also about this one:

It is the Emerson Waved Endura and I own a Military too. The milie is a wonderful worker.
But I guess, no other spydie-clipit-knife is faster open than this endura. :D and an endura is a wonderful worker too.

Do you mean Ed Schempp?

That might have been him.
He was a pleasure to talk to.
Do you know which models he designed?
How is your penknife?

Hello Katsu! My vote would go for either the Paramilitary or the Dodo. Both are tough and won't fail you, whatever the need. I don't really carry for SD, but don't underestimate the Dodo for this purpose! It is quite useful for utility and would make a great defensive weapon!

My vote... ATR or Military........ Both outstanding blades....... Would lean a little more twards the Military because of the G-10 handle for SD....

Katsu -

My spydie choice is one many think is the ugliest Spyderco knife made. It has a pug nose (not the sharp pointy one like many) but it makes up for this by having gobs of cutting edge on a straight blade. It was recommended to me by some friends at the fire station. It is the Spyderco Rescue. I like it!

The knife is large and with the orange handle I think just the appearance of such a large serrated blade would cause me to head the other way fast. It has a ton of cutting edge yet is light enough for easy EDC. But many think it is too ugly so you might want to get something else!

I have paid for a numbered PE black blade Paramilitary from an auction site but have not received it yet.
Rushed home from work expecting to find temporary happiness and the tracking site says it is still at the Post Office across town.

I collected some years back. I had some nice knives that I HAD to sell unfortunately. Mostly Benchmade, MicroTech and Customs. But, I had never owned a Spyderco. I recently started to pick up a few knives and I wanted something "small" to carry at the office. I picked up a Stainless Cricket with the VG-10 serrated blade. Wow! I truly like this little knife. Slim, smooth and what an edge! Almost scary! Are all Spyderco knives this sharp?

Tony

Paramilitary or MINI manix may be great for hard duty and pinch defense.

'Spyderco Initiate' sounds like a good name for a knife,

I agree. Either of these would be a good choice. If you're looking for something larger, they can both step up to a larger size in the Military or Manix respectively. Any one of these four knives would be a good choice.

Picked up the Para today and am impressed.
I will post more after use but can anyone tell me what type of screwdriver it takes to loosen the pivot?

Yeah most of them are...the Cricket is on the high end for super sharp, but all new Spydercos are pretty famous for being "scary sharp" as they say. I began carrying mine every day some time ago and it ends up doing most of my mundane city chores.
