In my own personal opinion, I don't see Spyderco as the Lamborghini of knives. Lamborghini is an exlcusive, inherently expensive boutique maker of automobiles. They make their cars in limited runs, by hand. They are not the most aesthetic of cars, but they are exotic and undoubtedly powerful in their own right. I would more compare Lamborghini to makers of exotic tactical customs...limited runs, exclusive materials, sharp-edged designs, all appealing to testosterone.
I would compare Spyderco's product plan to a production automaker, perhaps General Motors, most in particular Chevrolet (though without the financial troubles---but that's a topic for another section). Spyderco has less costlier models available to all---think of the byrd line as an equivalent to an economy Chevrolet four-door like the Cobalt.
It makes tough, everyday use designs available to the working man (such as the Endura and Delica) which are standbys of the industry much like the Silverado.
It makes family (or sheeple)friendly designs at an economical price (like the Dragonfly) which could be equated to the Malibu.
It also makes the costlier versions, much like the Superhawk, which could be considered the Cadillac of Spyderco.
Spyderco also makes sprint runs of exotic models, things such as left-handed, carbon fiber Civilians and the more recent designs. This could be equated the sprint runs of GM product---such as the new $106,000 Corvette ZR1.
In overall performance characteristics though, if we're comparing Spydercos to supercars, I don't think it would be Lamborghini. Lamborghini is a brutally powerful, exotic machine---something of a Busse. I think Porsche would be more apt---the newest Turbo has been called the finest driving machine ever devised by Motor Trend. It's fast, but ergonomic and well-balanced in all aspects. Ergonomic, well performing, constantly innovative---the common denominators between Porsche and Spyderco.
Forgive me for my digressions, but I'm a bit of a car buff as well as a knife knut.
