The Spyderco JD Smith Knife was designed by custom knifemaker JD Smith for Spyderco Knives. The illustrated JD Smith Knife features a 3 1/4 inches serrated clip point blade made of ATS34 stainless steel, 1/8" thick, with a Rockwell hardness of 59-61. The blade has the Spyderco hole for ambidextrous one hand opening.

The black Micarta handle, 5 inches closed, has finger grooves, a lock back, and lanyard hole. A pocket clip is mounted at the pivot end. The Spyderco JD Smith Knife has an overall length of 8 5/8 inches when open and weighs 3 ounces.

It takes a masterful custom knifemaker to successfully meld functionality and eye-catching appeal into one knife. J.D. Smith is a member of the Knifemakers Guild and a Master Blade Smith. Years back he designed and made a tactical-style folder for his own personal use that was ergonomically comfortable, crafted from technologically advanced materials and still delighted the eye.

This design developed into the Spyderco J.D. Smith CLIPIT. By positioning the Spyderco Trademark Round Hole strategically on the ATS-34 stainless steel blade, there is no pronounced hump. This gives the folder an overall streamlined shape that starts at the blade tip and continues through to the butt of the handle.

With a blade length approaching 4 inches, the J.D. Smith is a sensible-sized folder for daily carry. This version has the SpyderEdge serrated configuration. In keeping with J.D.'s flair for style and preference for quality materials, the handle is made of Micarta and features a black satin-luster finish.

The knife's grip and comfort are enhanced by the lightweight handle, which is expanded at the pivot pin to create a choil and finger guard for exceptional cutting control. Spyderco added a black steel clip allowing for tip down carry in the pocket.
