Frank k gave me the opportunity to try this knive which Ive been eyeing for a while. I just couldnt bring myself to shell out almost $100 without holding it first and I havent come accross any retailers that have it in store.
The timing with which I recieved this knife couldnt have been better. I was just beggining to move boxes with all my belongings into my new apartment when the mail lady stops me and hands me a package. The knife came out of the priority mail box and into my pocket it went. Normally I would not have used it for daily cutting tasks. As I see it, its a pretty SD specific knife. But I couldnt ignore the timing and saw it as an omen to really use the thing.
It cut packing tape on boxes, electrical tape and thin wires, plastic bags with furnature screws, plastic pegs that didnt quite fit into their respective holes 9(cheap Ikea crap) and a futon matress.
I found that the extreme hook of the blade was very helpful when cutting string and wire, it tended to cut the boxes more that I wnted it too since it hooked its way into the cardboard. It held the string so that the blade cut very well considering how short it is. The biggest thing that would keep me from using it for daily cutting chores is the fact that this thing is scary looking. Id be way to self concious pulling it out in public to cut some rope. The thing reaks of weapon.
The futon mattress is where this knife's real application came out. I had this old mattress I was gonna throw out, so I figured Id have a go at it with the karambit. I could believe the damage this short little blade created. Deep wide gashes, about 1 1/2 inch wide and 2 inches deep. Apparently, the hook tears into the object is cutting and pulls itself in deeper. It also punch cut really well. When held with the index finger through the hole, the tip of the blade points straight out. Punching the mattress in this grip put clean one inch wide and deep holes in it.
I found that wearing it in the watch pocket of my jeans, with a poorman's wave (zip tie) in the thumb hole, allowed for a very fast draw. I kept the clip on it, so that it was clipped to the small watch pocket. As long as i was wearing a t shirt or some other shirt untucked , it was invisible. Yet it could be drawn in well under 2 seconds.
I guess the best possible compliment one can give a knife is to go out and get one. I like this knife so much, if even only for SD, that Ive ordered one myself.
