I recieved the knife this afternoon. I will put it to work over the next couple days and post my full review as well as pass it on to next on the list on Friday. Thanks

Oh yeah, I have to say, this is one seriuos tool, I have never seen a knife quite like this and I am happy that there is a short list on this one, That gives my a better chance of finding one for sale. :)

Spyderco Khalsa

Ok, Even though I really don’t want to, the knife is packed up and will be shipped out tomorrow. I really didn’t get to test it as much as I would have liked. But here is what I think of the Khalsa:

-Its design would end any argument about a knife being a tool. This knife screams TOOL!!!

-The blade design is great; The Spydy hole is set up and to the back, so the large upper addition to this knife doesn’t get in the way when cutting. (I know that that must sound confusing, but for anyone who had never seen this knife, do a quick search and all will become clear.

-When I received the knife it wasn’t really shaving sharp, but a few strokes on the Sharpmaker and it got a really nice edge and maintained it throughout the week.

-The handle curves at the bottom and was a perfect fit for my hand.

-The larger section of the blade made a perfect resting spot for my thumb.

I mainly used it to cut cardboard, tape, open various new knife arrivals and basic daily cutting tasks. The way the blade is designed, it didn’t really ride well in short pockets and had me afraid that I was going to loose it, But in jeans it was fine.

I wish to purchase one or more of these knives when I have a chance, not as an EDC, but I would love to have one of these in my tool belt, one in my tackle box as well as one in my junk drawer for various tasks. It’s a real shame they are not more widely available. Thanks Dave for the chance to handle this baby and first thing tomorrow it will be on its way to BurkStar.

Who's got the Khalsa?

Edit:

Nevermind I see baraqyal has or will have it shortly.

Well, it sort of looks like the guntings ramp. But otherwise, I don't think it's real similar.

Here is half decent picture of the Khalsa.

Here's a copy of my review from the "sign up" thread.

Sorry for not posting earlier...Dave is there another thread for posting, couldn't find it (obviously I found it).

So, anyway, got the knife the other day and have been carrying it. Not too bad so far. The handle is a lot thicker than I'm used to, could probably get used to it, but not enough time. The blade shape, like most Spydies is unusual, to say the least, but have found it really helps in the kitchen. With all of my overtime the past couple of weeks, I really haven't had much time to use the thing, but the little bit I have I'd say overall not a bad knife but not something I'd go out of my way to look for. It did a fair job on boxes, more than sharp enough but the blade shape hindered it. The width is my main complaint, its even too bulky in my pocket. It might make a good office knife if I kept it in my desk drawer.

Will get it out Monday morning, thanks Dave, this was an interesting pass-a-around. Sorry for the poor review, just haven't had time for much else.

I received the knife yesterday.

Initial impressions:

Handle:
The micarta is slick. But, that's micarta for you. I'm not sure I like the grip - the cutout for the index finger is a little small for my hands (I'm 6'4" with big hands.) It puts the rest of my fingers at a bit of an angle. I do like that you can choke up on the blade - the choil is pretty nifty. It doesnt seem very thick to me - probably about the same as the Lil Temperance. The liner lock is somewhat unusual, as it disengages in a lower place than I expected.

Blade:
The choil is cool. The gunting-like ramp is nice too - it Spydie-drops extremely well. The ramp is at an uncomfortable angle for my thumb in saber grip. The blade came shaving sharp. The swedge on the top of the blade bothers me a bit.

Lock:
The lockup is strong, with the liner engaging at about 1/3 the way across. I detected a small amout of vertical blade play, but nothing serious. I don't believe it would be easy to accidentally disengage this lock.

Clip:
The clip seems a little loose. Maybe I'm just used to the newer-super tight Spydie clips. It rides nicely in the pocket, much lower than the gunting. Little bit hard to get a good grip on to get out of the pocket. The clip also works well for IWB carry. The khalsa is tip down, BTW.

Fit/Finish:
It opens and closes very smoothly. The fit and finish are standard Spyderco - excellent. The ball detent is strong enough to keep the blade closed. The pins are perfectly flat against the micarta scales, making for a smooth knife.

Overall:
A very slick knife. I wish it was a little bigger, to fit my hands better. I like the shape, and design. Very cool.

I'm not sure what role this knife was meant to fill.

I'll post more (hopefully with pictures) soon.

Thanks!

Ive had one since they first came out, its always been my favorite!! I even used it to cut to pounds of frozen hamburger in half and havent sharpened it since ( I was in a place where nothin else was available at the time).

Well, the knife is on its way to the next stop via USPS priority.

Overall, I really like the Khalsa. I'm glad I got the chance to try one out.

Makes me want to get another gunting.

The Khalsa reminds me alot of the gunting. Take the gunting, remove the kin-op, and most of the tactical (G10, Compression lock), shorten and curve the handle, and you have something pretty close to the Khalsa.

The handle is unusual. At first, I really didn't like it. By day 2, I'd gotten used to it. It has a unique feel.

The khalsa carries very nicely. It also looks great sitting on a desk, blade up.

I've had spydies in Gin 1 before. I always liked the steel in the past. I like it even more now.

It is both a work of art, and a serious utility knife.

The only major flaw I found was the choil. It occasionally can catch on things when doing pull cuts. Otherwise, it's a terrific knife.

I unfortunately did not get the chance to take pictures. My digital camera was out of batteries, and I did not have time to get new ones.

This was a lot of fun. Gave me the chance to carry a new knife, without having to pay for it. :)

Thanks alot, Dave!

Darn... how to get on this pass around? I was looking to buy this knife and it seems nobody sells it anymore. Even to be able to lay my hands on one, albeit however transitory, would be nice. Anybody even know who still sells it? Please let me know. Thanks.

Shmoopiebear,
Try Patsy at www.beckscutlery.com , and also post in the "Knives Wanted" section here at Bladeforums.
I have a Khalsa also, it has no clip, but is still easy to carry. I like to carry it on sundays to church. It rides well in the bottom of my suit pockets. :)

shmoopiebear,

Once I get it back it will be forsale, there's one person to go. There may be someone else interested first, but if they don't want it, then you can be next in line.

I'd email ya but your coms are turned off.

I signed up for a gold membership a couple days ago so I could sell things. I haven't heard back yet. Are there computer problems?

Anyway, if one of you wants this Khalsa knife, I have one sitting in the safe...I'll probably never use it. I have several Sebenzas, a couple Umfaans, plus several Benchmades and other Spydies...too many knives...I think I'm sick...

If you want to make a decent offer, let me know. Some suggestions as to a fair asking price wouldn't hurt either. Hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Mike
