Spyderco knives and the Sharpmaker

Silly questions, but I'm trying to get this thing down:

I'm not fully understanding the back bevel and edge settings on the Sharpmaker and I have a few questions.

When I'm looking at my Spydercos, let's say any FFG so I limit confusion explaining, is the knife 'edge' that is about 1/8" wide considered the back bevel or the edge? Can I use just the 30d without damage to the blade?

Do I need to do both the angles? What's the reason for doing a 30d then 40d? Wouldn't that just make it less sharp?

Do I need oil or water on these?

Fwiw, this system is a hand-me-down that didn't come with the instructions. I did watch a youtube vid that showed how to do it, but not with a lot of explanation.

I was about to pick up the diamond stones for this, but got a Norton course/medium stone on the way to try free handing. My problem is...I don't know anything about this. I'm reading in the other forum section about sharpening but figured Spyderco questions should go here.

It helps tremendously to watch the video before using it. The explanation and instruction Sal provides is all you really need.

I have a old sharp maker with one setting.
Never needed anything else.

I'm liking my Sharpmaker less and less ever since I got an Edge Pro.
For most knives, it's fine but inferior to a guided rod system. For some reason, Super Blue is a nightmare for me on the Sharpmaker.
I usually stop after the coarse stone, because fine and ultra-fine just make it duller somehow :grumpy:

Use the sharpie method. Coat the blade edge with the sharpie. Try a swipe on the 30 setting. If it removes the sharpie mark at the edge, stick with the 30 degrees. If not, go to the 40 or you can spend the day back beveling to 30.

That or prop up the sharpmaker on one side so it hits the bevel or adjust the angle your holding the knife so your hitting the bevel.
