I was a member of the Amazon 5000 Expedition. It just finished 4859 miles from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean across South America. I was there for 2 legs of the expedition, a little under a month of the 11 months the expedition was going. Spyderco Knives were pretty popular folders on the expedition. In fact, the only non-spyderco stuff I saw for folders is the knife I brought.

I am a big believer in the concept of machete plus good folder and Spyderco certainly filled the folder role well.

This Pacific Salt was carried by various natives and saw extensive use.

Here is a typical example of how the folders were used. Timothy sharpened the end of a stick.

He also cleaned the fish to prepare it for grilling over coals.

Although a slightly less glamorous use, this small Spyderco saw heavy use as a toothpick.

Lol seeing him pick his teeth with a knife makes me cringe. Its awesome though to see spyderco as a staple knife in the jungle!

Thank you for your post. Any additional photos and information when you have time would be welcome. While one of my mottos is, "never say never", I doubt at my age I'd take a trip through the Amazon....so I very much enjoy these kinds of posts.

Now those are "hard use" folders.

Love the pics - jealous of the trip though. That sounds pretty awesome.

Amazing photos and story. Thanks for sharing! I think the Salt series would be right at home in such a humid climate.
