I recently boght 2 more spyderco's the persistance and the catbird.. the question I have i read a lot of the blogs here, seems a lot of people do not like knives from overseas but at the same time spyderco is always a fav, despite coming from china. What is it about spyderco that forgives it from being a oversea's knife? Thanks for any info...

Most spydies come from japan, the cheaper line + byrds come from china. I think japan is more ok amongst US members..

It is because even though the knives are produced overseas, they still hold the same quaity as a Golden, CO made Spyderco, or a Seki City, Japan made Spyderco. When you buy a Spyderco, regardless of where it is made, it still holds the Spyderco Quality.

Quality control is always an important factor wherever a blade is made. If the QQ is good then the knife should generally be reliable. Some people only buy American made products, but I really don't care where it is made, as long as quality is evident. I would say most (I think) Spydercos are actually made in Japan, with VG-10 steel, of which I have been very impressed. They are also made in Golden, Colorado as well is China.

There are purists who would never buy a chinese-made knife, but many other people realise that for example the Tenacious is simply a good product at the price.

Spyderco does so much good for the knife community, like sponsoring cutting competition cutters, fighting the recent customs law changes, testing and producing new steels, and constantly innovating. But they are still a company that needs to turn a profit. If they don't, they perish and we all suffer. Don't want a Spyderco knife made in China or even in Japan, there are plenty to choose from made right here in the USA.

I don't have any Spydercos from China, but that's mainly because I collect them and don't buy them as users. The higher end stuff tends to be from Japan and the USA. If you want a good user nothing at all wrong with the Spydercos being made in China and they are a good value besides.

Spyderco made a great name for themselves by providing great knives from the U.S.A. and Japan.

Only recently did Spyderco start making knives in China.
And they were not so warmly received as you might think.

Personally, I doubt that I will ever buy a Spyderco knife made in China.

Spyderco Tenacious and Pretence have gotten a lot fans. True Spydies even they are made in China. There aren't much that isn't made in China. A lot crap comes from China but also a lot good stuff. Chinese have improved their methods in knife making. It won't be soon when China might be producing better quality knives than most European countries.

We cannot afford dismis chinese and China. When most European's lived in Mudhuds, Chines had hundreds of miles long The Great Wall, paper, paper money silk, rockets gunpowder, compass, working mehcanical clock and a lot more.

Western civilization owes as much in China in terms of technology as west owes for ancient Greek for its base for civilization.

No, but we do need to be careful when pruchasing chinese-made products. Ignoring the political isssues that some people base their decisions on, China has developed a reputation for cheap, shoddy products (much like Japan had immediatly after WWII). They can make good products (as the Chinese-made Spyderco's show), but most US companies that contract their production to China are more interested in cutting prices as much as possible rather than producing a quality product.

When it comes knives, I whole heartly support hand made knives and I would buy all my knives directly from the maker if possible. No machine made knife can beat knife that is made by experienced and good knife maker who knows what he or she is doing.

Problem in US and European for that matter strategy is that we paid Chinese new machines, we educated them. 10 Years ago they made things in fraction of European worker. Now costs have risen. In next 10 years most expertise and machines are in China, where its as expensive to make stuff than in the states and in Europe but know how is dying in Europe and the States. 10 years after that. China makes more expensive stuff, has best machines and best worker with know how we took there.

Outsourcing is corporate version of get-rick-quick-scheme and you don't plan long term in there. All corporations want big bucks now. They don't think what happends in 10 or 20 years from now. No if they can get money in 5 years and get huge bonuses.

I agree. I own several Sypdercos made in China and the quality is excellent. A few years ago, most Chinese import knives were poorly made, but not any longer.

I don't care how good a knife or a bargain a Chinese knife is. I won't buy it. I don't mind a few Japanese made knives because Japan doesn't hate the U.S., but China does. There is enough Chinese stuff I can't really avoid buying but knives aren't among them.

I would buy a Byrd made in China for Spyderco, but I will never buy a Spyderco made in China. Something about a Chineese Spyderco that just dont sit right with me.

What are you trying to say? You lost me.

Agreed. Like most domestic and foreign contract manufacturers, China based contract manufacturing plants (as well as Japanese) manufacture to a customer determined price point and specifications.
