There is an obsession, or maybe even I can stretch it to say a cult following Spyderco... and I don't understand it. Their knives are seriously overpriced, and form what I know, you don't get much out of it.

Can someone enlighten my on the Spyderco obsession?

What are you comparing too? If BM then I'd say they are almost always lower priced for the same materials a delica at $55 vs a mini grip for $75 for instance, I'd go so far as to say they're one of the best bang for you buck brands out there, however if you're comparing them to say Sanrenmu or a $1.00 wal-mart knife, yes they can both rope, both have back locks (one I would be afraid to use to hard) and both have pocket clips. The spyderco does cost 20-100 times more, but to most owners its worth it.

Which models do you think are overpriced? What knives out there amongst the manufacturers do you think represent a good value? Are you looking at MSRP?

Well, you're not gonna find many people here that would agree with you. The truth is, if you compare the street price of the average Spyderco knife to a comparable (blade steel, handle material, ergos) knife from a different brand, they are very competitive.

Hmm, this smells like a trolling thread to be honest. Replace Spyderco with Buck, Benchmade, Kershaw, Busse, ESEE, BRKT, CRK, Hinderer, etc. and ask the question again. What is the issue that has you seemingly perplexed beyond all reason?
Your comment on "seriously overpriced" would lead many to believe that you are very, very (painfully) new to the knife world. Operating on this premise, how would you arrive at the conclusion that "you don't get a lot out of it"? Please, please explain...

Spyderco Resilience, Persistence, Tenacious, Byrd knives, too expensive? Hmm, I think not, unless you are used to the $2 gas station knife displays.

Obviously the OP doesn't do much research and is ignorant to quality products.

A quick search would change anyone's opinion on the can of worms the OP just opened.
Other than my impulsive irritation I wouldn't even bother posting in this thread.

You can get the Tenacious for under $30. The slip joint Bug is only $8.

They have a great warranty and are one of the sharpest knives right out of the box.

See how many threads you can find where someone had to send one back due to a manufacturer defect.

I was just looking at my Spyderco knives...yeah I don't get you.

I don't feel like I overpaid for the knife I got.

I have nothing against spyderco and yes, I am rather new t othe knife world. Actually, I was watching a SHOT 2011 video with the Spyderco knives in it... this little one, about a 1 inch blade, for $200. I know nothing about Spyderco really, so I saw this and was shocked.

No trolling here, just trying to learn ;)

@zippothisknife that, you can keep your insulting comments to yourself. There are plenty of forums out there, I thought this was one I could come to to learn.

Are you comparing the amount of steel in a Spyderco to that in a fixed blade like a Ka Bar or Becker and seeing the cost from that perspective? Fixed blades and folders are very different, and you will usually find the folder with better f&f and higher grade materials. Spyderco make some of the best value folders, and if you don't like the price, you will find yourself out of luck in the knife world.

If Spyderco knives are overpriced then Spyderco is defeating the laws of the marketplace. Overpriced products do not sell and the company does not last.

Spend $30 and get yourself a Persistence and it will all be clear to you then.

Next thing you know you'll be buying those $200 Spydies because you liked the first one so much you had to have more.

Seriously though, pick out an inexpensive one and give it a try. You'll be glad you did.

Come to learn with humility, not a derogatory tone. You saw a video. Have you ever held a Spyderco? Where do you see an obsession or a cult? Of course people see trolling in an overblown opening post.

Read the Spyderco forum here for a better idea of how the knives perform.

It may have been wise to specify that is your original post. Yes, that one is pricey, but it is a sprint run. It has carbon fiber, which bumps up the price as well. But the balance isn't part of their usual line up, and is more or a premium knife, which isn't built for its utility in some ways.
Also in the video Ed said a SS version would be coming out.

I apologize. I have seen it everywhere, and have heard lots of bad things about spyderco... obviously not from very reliable sources.

I am not a cheap knife fanatic, and am more experienced with fixed blades. Maybe I will go pick up a Spyderco and see.

Again, i'm sorry.
