I know that Spyderco tests their knives on a "knife breaking" machine. The machine measures how much force has to be applied before the lock fails. Is there a way to find out what the results were on some of Spyderco's knives or is that classified information. I am specifically interested in the results for the Wegner, Military, ansd Starmate. What ther tests does Spyderco use to test their locks?

Dennis - Currently, we "spine wack" for defeat and break for strength. Breaks are done by machine and have to meet certain minimum standards that we create. Mostly based on the size of the blade (leverage arm) and sometimes based on useage.

The "breaking" machine is air actuated and has a printed graph of the break for closer analysis.

We've not yet come up with a "public" standard but we're working on one. eg: this lock held ultimate strength in the "B" category (250 inch/lbs to 400 inch/lbs). Break was not catastrophic, etc. etc.

At this time, "Spine wacks" are still manual, but this will change in the future.
