spyderco lockbacks - hitting inside of handle

Hi Sal,

I was just wondering, I've owned 3 ladybugs, and all of them basically "stop" closing by hitting the inside of the FRN handle. Like, there's no stop pin, or any other mechanism other than "keep going till the blade hits the handle". I talked to others in the chatroom tonight and one person reports that is how his FRN Delica is like. (We can tell cause there is a big groove on the inside of the handle from the blade contacting the handle). Another person commented on owning a $4 cheapo-copy of a ladybug, it acted this way too, and he was aghast to find out that real ladybugs are like this too.
So, is this normal for your FRN lockback designs?

My endura, calypso, and delica among others do not exhibit this. No lock back I ever had did.

IIRC (sorry, too lazy to get up and check), the blade on my Ladybug will hit the FRN if I allow it to snap closed. However, with all my other Spyderco lockbacks (Rescue Jr., lightweight Calypso Jr., blue Delica, G-10 Navigator, CF Dragonfly, Ladybug II, old style Merlin, baby Jess Horn) the blade stops well clear of the FRN. I don't believe you will find a stop pin on a lockback; instead, the blade stops travelling when the ricasso makes contact with the lockbar.

well, as I said, then I've run into 3 bad Ladybugs. Also, I personally believe that if it's true that a Ladybug only stays clear of the handle if you close it gently, then that's poor design/construction, period. Oh well..

Well, if it's the inside of an FRN handle that the blade contacts upon closing, then I don't see it to be a problem. That would never damage the blade, I don't think.

it certainly has a dulling effect. That's how I noticed it at first, my blade was getting duller with no use for some reason! I took a look, and concluded it must be from hitting the handle.

I didn't think that it would. I guess it makes sense, as FRN is pretty hard stuff.

I just checked several of my FRN Spydies, including Ladybug I & II, and it is not a problem.
