My normal
carry knife is an Almar SERE2000 for tucking in my waistband because it's clip offers good concealment because it sits so low. My eyes have been wandering to the Spyderco Lum Chinese though after stumbling onto the passaround thread. I have medium/small hands and the handle looks like it would be great for my hands. I like the opening hole design. My questions are about the lock. How strong is it? My SERE2000 has a great linerlock while a Emerson Mach1 I had before that would fail without much effort pushing on the back of the blade. I returned it in exchange for the SERE. I'm looking for a small carry knife for the office and the Lum is really talking to me. I'd liek the opinions of a few people before I get one.

If I decide to get one, I will have a lightly used well taken care of Almar Sere2000 for trade for a plain edge Lum Chinese.

I highly recommend the Lum Chinese. :D ;)

I've had my green Lum Chinese, in PE, for a couple of months now and absolutely love it. The linerlock is one of the toughest that I've seen on a folder and have never had mine fail on me. As you may or may not know, the Lum has dual steel liners and the linerlock springs out to lock the blade VERY solidly and with authority. The VG-10 steel is absolutely awesome(can be sharpened to a WICKEDLY:eek: sharp edge), and the alumite coated aluminum handles are smooth and very classy. The position of the SS clip allows for very low carry in pocket, or IWB, when in the tip-up carry position.

IMHO, you won't be disappointed with this Spydie. Good Luck. :)

I'm with KBR on this :)

I'm not a big fan of liner locks but this one is rock solid.

Regarding the liners - on close inspection, I don't think the Lum has any liners, just the 2 almite handles. The liner for the lock is nested into one of the almite scales. (similar to Mictotech's microbar).

For light use it's great. One of the most awesome slicers I've ever used.

I'm interested in these also. jsun, can you explain more why you classify it as a slicer good for light use? Is it the blade thickness? I like the wide blade, but wondered if they didn't sacrifice strength for width.

Thanks

Here's the reason's why it's a GREAT slicer:

1. Full flat grind - the main reason
2. Comes very sharp out of the box
3. Great steel - VG10
4. Great blade shape - surprisingly large blade.

Here's the reason's why I say 'light use'

1. It's too dam pretty to abuse :)
2. The Almite handles aren't as grippy, as say, G10
3. There's no guard - so I'd be wary of hand sliding towards the blade. However, I doubt this will happen under normal use.

If they made it in G10 and gave a little bit of a guard (like, say a Native), then it would make a great hard use folder IMO.

jsun summed it up quite well in his last post. The spyderco Lum Chinese is my EDC folder. It's a great knife, and it's also rather sheeple friendly due to the pretty green handles! :D

So could one get G10 scales put on a Chinese Leaf?

Where could this be done? How much would it cost?

I just acquired another Lum in a trade and it QUICKLY bumped my current EDC (Tufram Cricket) from the top. I still carry the Cricket, but the Lum sees the most action. The liner lock is super tough...definately trust worthy and the handle is a real winner. The blade is broad and very flat...definately not a pryer...but damn...does it ever slice and dice!!! BTW if you haven't experienced Spyderco's VG-10...I couldn't think of a better knife to try it with :D
I've heard the SERE is one hell of a knife, but it can't be compared to the Lum because they are 2 very different styles of knife. Whereas the SERE is one of the top tacs around, I couldn't imagine seeing it with khakis and a dress shirt. I think that the Lum rides just as well in a pair of khakis as it does in a pair of jeans. I think that overall, it all depends on what you are looking for. If you need a knife that will take anything and ask for more, keep the SERE. If you want a hellofa classy EDC that is still very stout, check out the Lum.

Don't bother - get the Leaf Blade Lil' Temperance instead.

G10 handles, tough-as-nails compression lock, full flat ground blade.

Actually, get both! :)
