Hello Spyderco fans, I recently bought my first 2 Spydercos both are Lums. I'm an Emerson fan and own several, but never had any Spdydercos, something about the Lum caught my eye. I must say that I am Very Impressed with them. I do have a few questions, that hopefully you can help me out with. What can you tell me about the Titanium handle Lum? What year did it come out? It is marked 413 on the blade. Also the lock up is way over to the handle side, especially if I flick it open hard, it will touch the liner side. Is this normal for that model. I did some research on BF last night and saw that the first batch of Lums had that problem. Is this something that Spyderco can fix. How is Spyderco warranty dept? It also needs sharpening, it's not shaving sharp as the Gray sprint run version. Here are the pictures of the Lums

Thank you for any info you can provide.

What up S.T.R. Sorry, cant help much w/ your questions. Just wanted to say congrats on those beauty's. Recently bitten by the Spyders as well. Spent my first few years chasing Butterfly's, still am a big BM fan. Ive aquired 3 Spyderco as yet and the Lum`s you have are high on my list as well as the fixed Lum\Spyderco. Bob Lum was brilliant. Designs are elegant and timeless, his departure was a great loss to the industry and community.

Again, apologies for not being able to assist. Those are two beautiful knives, best of luck, enjoy them much.

Someone should be along w\ a more constructive post to help w\ your questions.

Welcome to the madness.

The number is because it's a collaboration. Spyderco used to number the first thousand of any collaboration model. The release date if I remember correctly is very late 90s to early 2000s. The lockup may be able to be resolved with rotating the stop pin. Before I did that though I'd make sure all the handle screws were tight. Or you could just send it in and let Spyderco have a look at it and sharpen it too.

rycen, Thank you for your response. I noticed that the stop pin on the Lums are flat on top and not round like on most other folders, so I don't think rotating the pin is an option.

I am super jealous. The grey sprint run is on the the top of my must haves. I just can't stomach the prices they sell for for a knife I'm going to carry and use.

With you on this one, although these are easier for me to resist because it's a "nice to have" instead of a "must have." I'll bet we'd have good success petitioning for a sprint of this one, once again in full Ti. Spyderco has few tanto designs, and a full Ti Lum would definitely fill a different niche than the Battlestation, which doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. There's whisper of the ATR coming back in sprint form, and I'm pretty sure that was at least partly due to forum clamoring.

I do not care for the Battlestation either. Looks nice, just not my style. I like the looks of the Doublebevel and if it ever hits $100 I will be trying it out. A new sprint run of the Lum ' and the ATR would be amazing. I was to young and dumb to appricate the ATR in its hey day.

Can't help much with your questions, sorry. I have a a PE black bladed version, and it's a great knife. The tip took a little getting used to, but it is a joy to carry. Unfortunately, I don't carry it all that often as I prefer smaller knives, but it looks awesome in my safe!

John

Thanks for your replies. I've been on a Tanto kick lately, I'm also trying to find a BM Lum LFTi and looking at the Spyderco Vallotton.
How is Spyderco's warranty dept? I've never delt with them before.

There not going to warranty a model that hasn't been in production for years. On new knives it is great. Any problem or defect I have every had they took care of in a timely fashion.

I think Spyderco would be able to put a stop pin in that is slightly larger in diameter to cause the liner lock to lockup earlier on the lock face (I've never had this done, but I seem to recall reading about someone having this done on another model). I'd send it in, especially if the lock touches the opposite scale, because they'll probably be able to do something about it for you. It may cost you a few bucks, but I've never seen any forum posts about the Spyderco factory charging someone a large sum of money to refurbish/work on a knife, and I'm sure they'd do the best they can for it.

3rdgen, Thank you for your reply. I've never delt with Spyderco warranty before, so I didn't know if they have a lifetime warranty or if you have to pay for services. I'll drop them a line on Monday and see what they say. It seems like a Great knife that just needs some attention to be brought back to it's full potential.

They don't do a lifetime warranty, but I'm sure it won't cost you an arm and a leg for them to improve it if they can....based on what I hear/have heard from the online community over the last couple years. I've never had to send them anything before myself though, so I'm basing my response purely from hearsay. I'll include a picture of most of my collection (I've added a few since I took this photo), but one of my Spydercos (My FRN Native...second Spyderco I owned and an identical replacement to the first I bought that was lost on a job site) shrugged off a 275 foot fall onto gravel (Closed) and is no worse for wear...you'd be hard pressed to notice the impact mark if I didn't tell you where to look. Spyderco makes and stands behind a good product...even the pinned FRN offerings can hold their own without any trouble. The knife is over a decade old at this point and I still carry it from time to time. I'll include a photo from about 275 feet for comparison sake...enjoy your Spydercos.

Had a grey sprint and converted it to a frame lock and then had to sell it. One of the only knives I regret selling.

I've had all of those Spyderco Lum models >> the folders C-46 and the fixed blade as well. It took me a while to learn to properly sharpen my C-46 Lum folder but once I got the hang of it I now EDC mine at least twice a month. I don't find it quite as functional as I do my precious Ayoob model but I'm learning more about what the late Mr. Bob Lum had in mind designing this great blade.

Before I got any of the Spyderco Bob Lum models I had never ever liked Tanto type blades at all. Not even just a little bit>> but the C-46 slowly changed my mind when I learned more about the design and it's intent of use. Now one thing about Bob Lum's tanto is that it is more streamlined that any other I've ever used>> which makes it a lot more functional than most tantos to be sure.

Another thing I like about all of the Spyderco LUM models is that all of them have an extremely thick spine on them and are extremely ridgid blades. Currently I'm EDCing the G-10 handled, black bladed, ATS-55 model of the C-46 Lum Tanto folder. I doubt if I ever get rid of it either. Bob Lum was a brilliant knife designer and I hope to have more of his designs in the future.

Awesome of course, it was like a reunion with an old friend. I've been too busy lately but I really want to post a pic of my three Lums together - black G10, grey G10, and the titanium version. Love the Lums!
