Spyderco M4 Military Blade play Problem Help!

Hi guys:

i just received a NIB Military G10/Ti with M4 steel. But i noticed little bit of blade play Up and Down, No side to side though. And knife opening/closing was not very smooth compared to other spydercos like the Sage 2 & Lum.

So i added some blade oil to it, didn't help much. I then tried to loosen the pivot screw, then the blade did open/close much smoother afterwards but had more up and down bladeplay when the pivot was loosen, I can actually hear a tiny rattle noise when i shake the knife.

Anyone else have blade play issues with the Military?? and/or have a solution?

cheers.

Both of mine came about as perfect as a production knife can get short of my Gayle Bradley. I think you just need to tighten the pivot back down and let the knife break in. The more you open and close it the more it will smooth out. The blade play is only because the pivot is too loose, I understand you loosened it to make it smoother, but as I said above the knife will smooth out over time.

Up and down blade play is not caused by pivot tightness if I'm correct. If you have the right tools and are comfortable taking it apart, you may be able to rotate the stop pin and fix the problem. Some times just disassembling and reassembling things makes issues go away. Of course, it could also introduce new issues so I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know what you're doing. You may want to just open and close for a few days to see if it breaks in first, otherwise, when in doubt, contact Spyderco.

While I've never struck any vertical play in my Millie's before, I have fixed similar vertical play problems with Para's through stop pin adjustment.
Check to see if the stainless insert in the Ti liner tang is secure, if not this could possibly be causing both the play and rattle.

This.

Seems like a likely culprit for the rattle along with blade play. You might just check all the other misc. screws for tightness, especially the clip.

That could be right. There was a single report a while back of one of these knives that reportedly arrived with the screws totally out of the insert. So, although it seems improbable, they could be loose. If that is the case, depending on how you feel about luck, I'd either buy some lottery tickets or stay off the golf course during storms. ;)

I have a 3 year old black g-10 Millie with the exact same problem. Mine developed the problem recently. I've tried the pivot screw and that does not help. I have an orange Millie that is perfect, and an old 2 screw model that is fine. Although the knife is three years old it has not seen much use, and could pass for new. I can hold it in my hand and shake it quickly and get the rattle also. Does anyone have pics of this "stop pin".

I just found out what's causing the noise and blade play whilst the knife opened. The bottom of the blade is tapping on the titanium lockbar everytime i move or shake the knife up/down.
When i push and hold the titanium lockbar more towards the G10 side all problems fixed. Guess i have to bend the titanium bar more towards the G10 now.

Do you have a picture of how far over the lock bar is moving? Do you think it's safe to bend the titanium or would it be better to have spyderco assume that risk?

hum,

send it back.

and ask for paid shipping back and forth, this is just not acceptable.

there is no way in the world i hazard bending a TI framelock, it has a lot to do with how well your knife will work and too much bending will make your lock plain useless if you go past the elastic limit of the TI.

this is not tinkering anymore.

That's what I'm thinking. Good advice.

If you dont have experince adjusting the lockbar on a ti knife I would

definately send it back to Spyderco. Ive adjusted lockbars on a CRK and a

couple of Striders. A friend on mine on BF told me how to do it. He's done it many times.

Its not something you should try if you dont know what you're doing.

Send it back to Spyderco. I know shipping isnt going to be cheap from "down under"

but let the experts do it.
