Well, first of all Hello :D

So, basically the title of the thread says it all. But I guess some details would help, so:

I'm a peruvian (it's a real word!) trekker. As a trekker I often need to use a knife, either to cut wood, ropes, food, to fight all kind of mythological creatures, or just to show off. I own a couple of half decent knives but they're not as good as I'd like them to be. In fact in find that they're very lacking when fighting centaurs.

Jokes apart, here in Peru you don't have access to a big array of knives, which is too bad. Anyway, I decided to spend some money buying a knife in the USA and have it sent to my country. After a lot of research, I narrowed my choices to one of the two models in question.

I want a folder because of the portability and the fact that I don't really need a fixed blade because there is hardly any batoning or wood chopping to do in the middle of the Andes. Size is not such a big deal for me since I don't plan to use those knives as EDC. I hace a small Kershaw Skyline for that which is pretty decent at it. I'd just like to know which one of those two knives would fit better the role I expect them to have. Personally I think the Manix 2 XL looks just stunning, functional, and I also like the G10 handles. But the BM and it's kind of lame Lego handle seem to be able to withstand more beating, and it's locking mechanism seems more sturdy, which for me is important since if the locking mechanism was to fail there is no way in the world I could make use of the knife's warranty and I'd probably end up using it to cut myself from sheer sadness. But I most likely am talking absolute nonsense.

So I'd like you to tell me which one to get, basically. Help!!!

Oh and also, Lima (where I live) is a very humid city, in the 85-88% department. Which explains the centaurs, they like humid places :grumpy: Any recommendation on how to keep my knife protected, as in where to put it when not in use, and of any product that might help me in keeping it without rust? Or no special care is needed (humidity-related) ?

I love you all ;)

I prefer the Manix, it feels sturdier. I got the feeling of light and cheap from all my large grips.

don't have any experience w/ the grip... but i love my manix xl, it's my new EDC (the para2 being my other =). Its a beast...

Hello,

I do a good amount of back packing, probably 5 multi day (3-5 days) trips a year but the rest of the time I do over night or two day trips. When I go on the short over night trips I like to take as little gear a possible and keep my pack as light as I can. After I set up camp and have down time I like to do a good amount of wood working and tools/utensils carving. Ive used both the Manix XL and the griptilian 551 while backpacking. The Manix XL is a great EDC blade. Its slim, has a great blade shape and size. Even know its 6.2oz it doesnt feel heavy in my jeans. But when I took it hiking I didnt like it. I hike in light weight fast drying pants. They have no structure or stiffness so the heavier Manix XL doesn't ride well. You can feel it pull on your pants and its very noticeable. When you do heavy carving for an extended period of time you get hot spots because of the square handle and sharper shoulders. The 551 does have a cheap feel to it but its not a cheap knife. Its light and the handle shape is more hand filling. At 3.82oz I didnt notice it in my hiking pants. They have baggy pockets so the larger profile isnt a big deal. I didnt develop any hot spots or blisters after a day of carving. The blade shape is a little better for carving too. The locks are a lot alike in function so that didnt matter to me but the 551 axis lock is easier to use when your hands are cold. The Manix XL just plain looks cooler. Its bigger and the quality is awesome. As an EDC blade I would take it over the 551 any day but the 551 is a better backpacking blade to me, I dont edc it ever though.

Have a good one,

Chris

Manix xl is big and beefy, griptilian is light and probably equally as strong despite feeling cheap. For your particular role I'd go with the griptilian h2o with the rust proof (almost) blade.

Amazing answer, thank you. I think I'll go with the Griptilian and maybe buy the Manix 2 XL some other time, as it seems to be a very good knife too.

For weight requirements go with the Griptilian 100 percent!

If you want a tank of a blade, and weight is no probelm, the XL definately.
