got it today (thanks shootist :) )

ok this is one serious blade. the leaf shaped blade makes the whole thing really wide when closed. on the chinook, the curved swedge on the spine keeps things compact. on the manix, the thing is hella wide. the blade profile isn't thin like the military, it's like the temperance fixed blade or lil temperance on steroids.

the lock is the same MBC rated lockback found on the chinook. like the chinook, i can close this thng one handed by initially dropping the blade just by depressing the lock release. it locks with the same authoritative snap as the chinook.

the handles are a bit different than the chinook. it's a bit wider but the same thickness. the recess up top is less deep. this is mainly due to the addition of the "subhilt" they added in. the recess at the butt of the handle is more pronounced vs the chinook. the manix also has a more pronounced finger "swell" and so feels better to me, YMMV.

the net effect is that the manix is a much better Utility tool than the chinook. this is mainly due to the blade shape. the chinook is still better for carry/SD as it's less wide, lighter, and has that wicked blade shape for backcuts.

Thanks for the review ...

Curious about your point regarding backcuts. Backcuts with an unsharpened swedge? Are you thinking that scraping the point across someone's skin will cause appreciable damage?

I have seen mentioned before that the back cuts with the Chinook are more for harrassment purposes than inflicted dramatic damage.

Glad you like it madfast. I hope to get another soon.

The Manix kicks major butt. I believe it's my new favorite Spyderco model (the Military is still right up there, though) Eric did one helluva job designing this one. :D

Exposed skin, yes indeed. There's also a backcut-style stab (stabbing in an arc with the edge on the outside of the arc and the spine and point on the inside. I think it's called 'punto reversa', but don't quite know) that, with the Chinook II or a similarly upswept blade shape, is just plain nasty.

yes, that's what i believe keating designed it to do, to nick the perp with the tip as opposed to an actual cut. the tip of the chinook is very pointy. tip strength maybe suspect for such a pointy tip, but the spine retains it's thcikness until about 1 in from the tip where it has a gradual taper to the point. all in all, the blade is thick and stout. while i haven't nicked anybody with a "backcut" it looks like it can do considerable damage.

another note is that the tip is not centered at all (if you orient the blade so that the base of the edge is vertical). it tends toward the spine of the blade. the net effect here is that a backcut will cause a ripping effect on flesh due to the curve of the blade and the pointy tip. think of an animal claw. the curve and the tip will cause damage.

shootist, get another one asap, i almost feel guilty taking this monster from you...almost :p

I am sure that the Chinook’s tip can do some major damage – think meat hook not skin scratcher!
