Spyderco Manix: prefer "normal" one (S30V) or BD-1 on...

translucent blue one. On YouTube someone said BD-1 is great. Then I read it is probably between ATS-34 and AUS-8. Any opinions on the knives and steels? Tx!

Depends on your use. The regular manix is way heavier, and for harder use. The s30v is gread, but if you are just using it for EDC both knives will work but the lightweight is lighter and the steel will hold up just as well :) I may pickup an new LW in black this year.

I would prefer the s30v blade but the Manix that I would be getting is one of the lightweights with bd-1 probably in blue. While I would prefer the s30v I would like to add that bd-1 to the list of steels I have used and it isn't like bd-1 doesn't work well especially for general EDC use.

Thinking about this further I think I just want more knives haha.

I have the translucent BD-1 steel manix. It's a good steel, but like the body of the translucent manix it's a little toned down from the normal version. It holds a decent edge in the "EDC: I may need a knife" sense but I don't think many people would use it as a work knife. It's really easy to work with and a great learning steel if you are new to sharpening.

Sal mentioned in a thread thwt BD-1 is slightly better than 8Cr13MoV. S30V is miles different fom BD-1, in many ways.

For EDC though most people are not going to notice the difference unless they break down boxes with it. Also BD-1 is significantly more corrosion resistant the 8Cr. I've used and owned both a FFG s30v manix and a Lightweight. They both have their purpose and for normal edc use both will work well, with the regular Manix being significantly overbuilt sor that purpose. I also do not like the hollow grind on that blade. Its too thick for my taste.

Sometimes it seems that Spyderco will use a better steel with a cheaper handle (Endura). On the Manix it seems the handle (pins, etc...) and steel are possible both inferior. of course it is much lighter and very nice. I wonder why they used BD-1? Two nice knives. Tx.

I have owned both..It really depends on your needs..

The lightweight is a full size knife at 3 oz. and carries like a much smaller knife. My lightweight fits nicely into my rotation when I know it's going to be an occasional easy day..It is not a hard use knife.. the steel ROLLS easy but touches up easy..Both are great knives. If I had to only have one with nothing else, then its easy.. S30V. If your at a place where you can place it in a line up with other knives, then the lightweight is an awesome choice.
