Spyderco Manix (the big one!)

Just received it today, wow you all aren't kidding when you say it's a "big folder."

I have it next to a BM710, and though the knives are similar lengths, the Manix has a much larger presence - the handle is the same thickness, though larger width, and the blade is a hefty chunk of steel. For this reason, it's best hooked on a belt (convenient tip down) and not in a pocket.

*Christmas idea* This knife is PERFECT for soldiers in the field - it's very easy to use if you have gloves or large hands (and is still fine in small hands too).

I particularly like the G10 handles - they are just the perfect texture (better than the 710) in being rough-but-not-sandpaper.

Opening is smooth and lockup is secure.

For EDC I feel like this is going to be a bit much for around-the-town use. I'm happy to see Spyderco sells a "mini" version, and will probably pick one of those up.

As for the comparison between this (the mini version) and the Para - it looks like the mini-manix would be my first choice given the lock mechanism.

Thank you for the review and the picture comparing the different models. The Manix looks like a bigger knife than the features description says it is.

Good size comparison pic. That Manix has alot more visual mass than the dimensions would lead one to believe.

I just got one of these on Friday. It is well made and very comfortable in the hand, but the lockup when open does not seem to be very solid. If I pinch the end of the blade I can easily make if wobble a bit up and down and can feel the lock mecanism move a bit in the handle. (It is very solid if I try to move it sideways.) I am planning to call Spyderco on Tuesday and figure I may have to send it to them for adjustment or return it to the seller. I really like this knife, the size and blade shape are just what I wanted; but the lockup really bothers me.
Has anybody out there had a similar experience? Is some play normal? Can it be adjusted? Or did I just get unlucky and get a lemon?

I own a Manix, and it locks up like a bank vault. It's very solid. I would definitely call the nice folks at Spyderco and ask for their assistance.

It's definitely a large knife, but it does handle very well. I really like mine.

That happens to me and my friends manix when I grab the tip and move the blade up and down. I think it might be natural for that to happen with the Manix because if you check out the Spyderco section of this forum their are alot of similar complaints. Its still a very solid knife though and dont doubt it one bit.

Mine has some vertical play too but I try to deal with it. It is a great knife except for this F&F defect. I think I will change my avatar to the Para. My Para is perfect.

Good information, picture is very helpful. With perspective like that compared to other knives, it looks like a great design .... need to handle one for myself and see if that handle is as good as it looks.

I had one with vertical play. My understanding is that Spyderco says the play is normal for a lockback.

Both mine have play as well. I sent the better one to a friend in Iraq. I sure hope it is useful to him.

The manix is a great knife. In some aspects I prefer it to the SnG.

A (Mini) Manix with ball-bearing lock would be sweet. :)
(I think the ball-bearing lock wouldn't fit into the handle - look at the D'Allara, and you'll see what I mean.)

Many of Spyderco's lockbacks have slight vertical play in them when locked. A tiny amount of vertical play should not affect performance. If there is a noticable amount, or you just don't trust any play at all, (understandable) then the warranty and repair folks at Spyderco should take a look at it.
