I'm thinking about maybe getting one, would it have practical applications besides its obvious design intent? I like its lines, but I use the knife I carry daily, and I generally don't carry more than one knife. Thanks.

Q

Practical applications such as what? It is a sharp knife with a nice point and a fair bit of belly to the blade. The negative blade angle takes a bit of getting used to (the edge isn't where I'm used to one being, and the first time I flipped it over to edge-in to peel an orange I got bit) but the handle is comfortable in my larger-than-average hands and the G-10 scales offer good traction. For a general purpose utility knife, you could do a lot worse.

Maybe not great for tasks like food prep due to the blade angle but useful sharp point and very sharp edge. Would be fine for picking splinters, opening boxes, etc.

It works very well for cutting things on a cutting board. The negative blade angle puts the belly of the blade lower than your knuckles. The blade is a bit thick for dicing, but it slices salami great.

Exactly what I was thinking. The angle between the blade and handle -- rather than the blade shape itself -- is the main self-defense-motivated design feature. The blade itself has a very practical/normal shape, especially compared to other knives in Spyderco's lineup that have self-defense-based designs that make them very impractical choices for general use (e.g., the Shabaria or, to take an even more extreme example, the Civilian).

In my opinion it's probably the most ergonomic Spyder I've ever owned. The pistol grip position it makes you feel like when you're holding it is so cool from the standpoint of comfort. It's so ergonomically comfortable that it truly doesn't feel like any conventional pocket knife I've ever owned. That's why I think it would be the ideal self defense knife myself because of the comfort/confidence factor I feel with it.

I'm fortunate enough to possess one of the older SE versions that I do carry from time to time and I love it. My boss just got the newer G-10 handled version and it's so classy that I truly hope it makes it back to the main line-up. Another great classic from the Golden Era Of Spyders (1998-2003)
