A few days ago I was in an outdoor store and by coincidence I saw a Spyderco Meerkat. I drove home and I desperately tried to not go back and buy it cause I spend enough money on knives already. But (as usual) I couldn't resist and I went back to pick it up. I really love it and I must say that it was more sturdy than I expected it to be. It opens smoothly and the lock feels very solid. Closing it with one hand is possible although it takes some practice. The girl who sold me the knife showed it to me and then tried to put it back in the box. After a while she said: 'I have no idea how to close it though'. Fortunately I read about the phantom lock cause I never handled one before myself. :)

Yea I dig the MeerCat. I picked one up from the Spyderco factory outlet for $30 awhile back. Its always fun to see if a friend can figure out how to close it LOL :D

Those are some SHARP pics

Did you finish reading the Blade magazines yet? - No need to send them back - I need to clean up here and they were gathering dust anyway!

Yeah I know how that can work with store employees, we know much more than they do in general. The Old Man in Amsterdam is another story however, then again they have that little plaque 'seal of approval' thingy from Spyderco itself. And 'casual pics' of the store employees hanging with e.g. Rex Applegate at a show.

Great store, too bad they're so much more expensive than online retail :(

Very nice photos, Sonny, they'd make me want to buy one if I didn't already have one. The lady behind the counter is not the only one with a problem, closing this knife. When I first got mine, it took me a goodly bit of time to figure out how the lock worked as there were no instructions included with the knife. :)

In the store I was able to close the knife at first try, but only because I read about how it worked on a website. :)

Like Mr Blonde wrote the store employees usually don't know much about knives (unless you go to a specialized store I guess). Not so long ago I tried to order a Para-Military. The guy behind the counter never even heard of Spyderco at all, let alone that he knew what knife I was talking about. In another store, were I eventually bought my Leatherman Charge Ti, the lady I talked to thought it had something to do with a battery charger. I pointed at a Leatherman Wave and said: 'no, it's something similar to this, only the Charge is the latest model'. Then she understood.

Nice pics. Mine has a different style tip, does anyone know if they changed designs at some point?

2 versions of the meerkat were made, reverse S tip and drop point tip. the one pictured above is the reverse S so you must have the drop point.
