I have a question and was hoping you might be able to advise me. I have a used Spyderco Military in 440V. The blade is no longer centered, though with adjustment of the pivot screw it gets better. Additionally, there is some lateral left-right movement in the blade on lock up. Long term, I would like to have the scales replaced with black-green micarta.

My question is two-fold:

1. Does it make sense to send the knife into Spyderco to address the blade and lock up issues first if I am going to have the scales replaced? Or is that something I could have the person replacing the scales do? It is my understanding that the scales work would likely void the warranty.

2. Do you do scales work (and such knife repair), and if not, whom would you recommend?

Thank you in advance for both your time and experience. Should you need to contact me privately, you should be able to through my screen name.

Thanks.

Blades off center on long thin knives is an issue that comes up now and then. I give some advise on this in my 'Tips and Tricks' thread which is one of the sticky posts top the page. Try whats listed there and see how it does for you.

On scales for that folder or any folder made similarly with nested liners I personally don't mess with them. I don't know anyone that does with the exception of maybe Kevin Wilkins who makes those BenchMade replacement scales for the Griptilian and Mini-Grip models.

Nested liners are a pain to duplicate without proper equipment. Since the lock on the Military liner is somewhat undersized compared to the scales and noting the way the scale fits snugly around the liner and also the fact that the liner is not a full liner but only a partial all adds challenges to the building of any replacement scale on that side even for the best maker. Without a CNC machine I don't know anyone going to try to spend that kind of time on a project due to the fact that few would want to pay for that time if you get my drift.

Could it be done? Well, maybe. I'm not going there though. :D Actually I quit doing scale work as stand alone work and only do them when in conjunction with a frame lock rebuild or complete rebuild of the body anymore. This particular job of scale replacement is one of my least favorite parts of folder making. I much prefer frame locks just for this reason and its part of the reason I love the simplistic build of that style of folder.

On warranty questions. I really can't say if the warranty will be voided or not. Some are very particular about that. I don't think Spyderco will void the warranty for taking the knife apart to clean it but I could be wrong. I know they realize folks take them apart to replace parts or adjust things and I have read comments on the forums of guys sending them in and having them covered a time or two after examining the insides but as for what is covered and what is not I'd suggest getting it straight from the horses mouth. If no permanent changes have occurred to the knife and it can go right back together just as it was shipped I don't see how they'd know it was one that had new scales for it unless the tells are in the screw heads and they could see that it was disassembled. Again though ask the source. I can't answer it for sure.
