Spyderco Military lock repair

I was recently given a Spyderco Military that I plan on testing. It has a very solid blade, but it was beaten to the point of being basically a fixed blade with blade play, also minus a clip. The lock appears to have had a LOT of force put on it and it bent all the way over to the other handle, requiring a screwdriver to pry the lock out of the way for closing. I was wondering what you thought about fixing this up. I'm guessing a new lock bar may be in order, but maybe you can repair the existing liner lock? As much as I would love a frame lock conversion I'm pretty sure it isn't in the budget right now. Also, I figure if you wanted to take this on it would be a good time for me to try out a patented STR low rider clip since this knife is missing one, and every time I have carried my CPM D2 Military I think how I would like it to sit lower in my pocket.

Thanks, Mike

Looks like it was someones real user for a time. The way Spyderco inlays that lock or does what they call 'nested liners' I may have trouble copying it. In fact since it was CNC done it may be impossible to copy since all my work is by my own two hands.

However with that said, I'm sure willing to see what I can do for you but the other problem I see is that my lock replacement if I can copy it and I do another liner lock would be simply to copy that one in the same thickness titanium. Due to the way it has to nest in the G10 I can't make it any thicker.

Keep in mind that the lock in there now is stainless. Mine of course would work and although not as strong as steel it would be less prone to deforming and pop back to shape better.

It may be possible to repair the existing lock also so I better throw that out there for you.

As for the clip. I have a clip here for either a Para Military or Military folder that would fit right on it. Its not a low rider but one of Spydercos original clips.

Feel free to mail it to me and we can go from there if you like. I won't be able to get to it this year I don't think. I'm going to be lucky to get stuff I thought I could get done out of here by then. From the 20th to new years I won't be doing much in the shop unless I want strung up by my other half.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, Steve. I will probably send it off in the next couple weeks, it really is no rush at all. The more I look at it the more I think the lock bar can be bent back, but I'll leave that call to you. I should probably e-mail you for pricing info, whichever route has to be taken (including frame lock pricing). The factory clip also sounds good.

If its a simple fix like that it won't be much. The other option is to maybe talk with one or both the guys I did a frame lock rebuild for that have those knives now and see if they would be up for maybe letting you snag their old lock they no longer need.

Then again you could wait for the next one to get sent to me for this and get one that way maybe. I seriously doubt if either of those guys would think to go back to the factory set up again with thier knives after having it as the frame lock I built. Its just a guess though.

I will look in the framelock thread and ask those guys. Another option I just thought of is Spyderco. I called and told them the history of the knife being beat on and that I would pay, and they said if they could fix it they would do it for a very reasonable fee, but it all depends on if the knife is new enough that it uses the same lock bar and geometry, or if the lock bar can be fixed. I would rather get a lock bar and send it to you though, as I feel bad taking up Spyderco's time and resources on something that was damaged by being abused, though I would be paying them a fee for it.

Ask Kevin if he plans on using the liner lock for his since he has Dwight's Millie.

I would suggest Spyderco if they will do it. Most of the work I do for them or the other companies is only on stuff they won't cover or can't due to warranty issues or the fact that they no longer make that model.

Either way though I'll do my best for you.

Thanks again for the help, Steve. I'll try Spyderco, and if they can't fix it I will ship it to you. I may also ship my other Millie in for a low rider at that time, as well.

Thanks, Mike
