Hi,

I'm considering one of the above knives for general hiking/outdoor use. I've never had a chance to use either of them. What would your recommendation be?

Thanks,
Jason

They are both good knives for general outdoor use, I have used both, I prefer the Military, just because the Chinook blade has too much of an upsweep for me, Just my preference. The military isn`t real good for cleaning game, The chinook is better suited for this, Except for the upswept blade makes it hard to open the belly. I think the lock on the Chinook is more solid than the Military. If the Chinook had a drop point blade, It would be perfect for me. Hope this helps a little.

Although i love my millie and edc it almost exclusively, I find myself a little apprehensive about doing some tasks with it that i dont with other knives due to its really thin tip. Just something to think about. It all comes down to what your intended uses are going to be for it.

I also had both.Have 2 millies now and sold the chinook.
I would also recommend the millie.
Its lighter and so easier to carry.

The millie is a great slicer.Strong lightweight big knife with very good ergonomic grip on the handles.

The chinook is nice too but is very heavy compared to the millie.
The upswept blade did not do the job for me.
If you prefer a heavier knife try to find an big manix.
Same type of "tank" build like the chinook but with a leaf sheap blade.
There are always some combo edged big manix knives for sale.

haven't used the chinook, but I do have a millie and love it. Its been my EDC for the last year, plus my woods bumming knife and have also used it for my work in the military and SAR.

Some porn.

can't say enough about the military. light, strong and flat. Like the full comfy handle.
It is a dedicated slicer and carver, kitchen use or wood carving. The grind makes getting a laser edge easy.
I went with safety orange and at work it gets less glances than most knives I have.

I almost edc one fulltime (the manix, emersons and rat-1 get jealous)
Always when fishing stopped using my fillet knife for anything under 4lbs and probably gutted and gilled 40 salmon this year
If you are cleaning fish and small game, the profile is good, you want thin and pointy for fish, birds and edible vermin (squirrel/rabbit).

liked it so much I bought 2. That was partially because spyderco said it was only doing a limited run of orange. Then came out with another run, negating its collectable value.

But I now have a spare. Would be a fancy addition to a survival kit/BOB

never liked the thickness and blade profile on the shnook.
Millie all the way! Best folder I have.

BUT, I'm a certified Military fanboy, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Ok, make that a bolder of salt ;).
More seriously now, though I know the Chinook only from pictures and didn't have the opportunity to handle it, if it compares to the Military it must be a terrific blade.

I really don't know what to add...
Military is my fav folder, and I have used mine extensively in the woods. Does the job with an excellence diploma!

Military all the way for woods use.

I had the Chinook3 james Keating knife and it sucked as a woods knife. Great knife for stabbing people, POOR knife for the outdoors.

The Military is my EDC and favorite folder of all time. The tip is it's weakness but shouldn't be a problem if used properly. It has a thinner tip than just about any knife I've handled but it works great as a cutter. Don't pry with it and you'll have no problem.
