I just bought this knife and love it. The lock-up is rock solid, it is light, and the blade length is perfect. I have a few questions however:

1. The action feels gritty. I see no evidence of a washer of any kind in the pivot. Is this normal, or am I overlooking something?

2. The blade says that it is made of CPM S30V, I have heard of S30V, however I do not know what the CPM is or stands for.

3. Is this knive duable? It only has a steel liner on one side, and the point of the blade is rather thin.

Thanks in advance for your responses, I a rather new spyderco owner and quite ignorant about the various models.

Hi Markh,

1) - Yes, there should be washers. Allthough Spyderco uses very thin washers. You should see a strip of light when you hold the knife against the light.

2) - After Googling a bit: CPM = Crucible Particle Metallurgy - more info here: http://www.crucibleservice.com/cutlery.cfm#

3) It has only liner to keep it lightweight. It doesn't need another liner for strength.

Hope this helps,
Ted

The tip of the blade is rather thin. Very good for fine work but I would not recommend any prying at all. I have a S30V Military and am very pleased with it. :)

I just got my first Military today! But it's not the first one I've handled. Why am I still buying so many knives?

The Military is optimized for easy opening and secure grip under a wide variety of circumstances, including wearing gloves. It is also optimized for cutting, cutting, cutting, cutting, cutting, cutting, -- you get the idea.

It is not a sharpened prybar. The tip will hold up just fine as long as you use it for, well, cutting. And you should have many years of fun with it! :D

1. It's normal. It will go away with break in.

2. Ted covered that fine enough.

3. Yeah, its durable. In fact the liner lock is whats called "nested". In order for it to break it would have to bust through the G10 handle. The blade itself is durbale if used right. I'm going to be a little harsh to some designs here, but I think it's necessary... A Military is a REAL knife. It's not some block of metal that opens and closes into a handle. It CAN'T handle abuse like those blocks of metal... But it CAN out cut them! What is the point of a knife? To CUT and CUT WELL. The Military with it's thinner blade, and fully flat ground grind does this like few others.

Use that knife and you will love it. :)

My Millie, apart from cutting well, has handled quite a bit of abuse as well. I even used it to pry my way out of a sticky situtation in the infamous 'locked in the toilet' incident of 2003.

Millie - looks a little flimsy, plenty tough enough.

My new Millie got a try-out tonight -- fruits, vegetables, salad, bread. Very nice. It's just long enough for anything and that deep belly works great, especially since the blade is canted down from the handle, which kept my knuckles off the cutting board.

It is very light for such a big knife. That gives it a deceptively flimsy feel. It is not flimsy.

After owning this knife 1.5 years, I can say that it is truly one of my favorites. I own a number of high end folders, many of which cost 2-3 times more. I Keep comming back to the Military. Durability has been top notch. It is easy to sharpen, cuts through about anything, the gritty feel in the pivot has smoothed out considerably.

In my eyes, it is a classic.
