Hello, I am buying one of these two and my needs are both utility and self defense. What are pros and cons of each and your experiances with each!:)

I have only had the Emerson CQC-7 and CQC-8 but I have owned four Military models including two PEs, one CE and one CF PE.

The Military is one of my favorite knives made. It is such a great cutter that it is really a knife and not a pry bar. It is very tough yet doesn't weigh a ton. It should be a much better slicer than the tanto blade of the 13.

Some people seem to think that they need a stronger knife than the Military but those people must be abusing their knife because I have never felt like the Military was not strong enough. If you are using the knife for normal things, I think the Military should be fine. If you want to pry man hole covers off the streets, you may break the tip of the Military. I say get the Military and try it out.

I think most people make the mistake of buying too much knife. As a result, they leave the knife behind. The Military is light and handy.

I really like the cqc-13. I'm not a big fan of the military. That's just my opinion. For utility, the military would probably cut better than the 13. For defense, the 13 has a much more secure handle than the military, and has the wave. Locks are probably about equal, but I might be just a little more confident in the emerson -for no perticular reason other than most emersons are liner locks. The military will be a little thinner and lighter, so easier to carry. Military is tip down only - 13 is tip up only. For me, I'd go for the 13 without question as the handle is very well designed and I like the clip point. For what it's worth, I've had a pe 13, a g-10 military, and a cf military. Only issue I had with any was the g-10 military which had blade play. Right now, I no longer have any of them, but I do have a cqc-12 which I will always have at least one of.

thanx for input, was it hard to sharpen cq13?? and can you sharpen it with a sharpening stone?(thats all I have)

I actually have been graced with a great local knife shop that sharpens all my knives for me. I think it could be sharpened with a stone though. You would basically sharpen the one side only and then the other side just slightly to remove any burr that may be there. I've never actually done it though. If you search, you'd be likely to find out more about it.

As much as I like the Military, that Wave feature is pretty cool. If you want something that is faster than a switch blade, the Wave is the only thing out there.

I have both knives, and i use them for different purposes.
The Emerson CQC13 is my choice for SD folder, secure grip, wave feature, and solid blade & equal point.
It will handle most tasks you throw at it.

That said, the Spyderco Military is without a doubt overall the better knife.
Much better designed and executed linerlock, i think the best in the current production market.
And thanks to the eccentric pivot pin you can maintain a good lockup even longer by adjusting it yourself.
It will also cut much better and longer because of the full flat grind and the better steel with very good hardening.
Point is quite thin, so use it for cutting without twisting only.

I now have 1 CQC13 and 4 Military models,
:)

i prefer the CQC12 to the CQC13 but i would prefer either to a millie, i do like millies though, but i just prefer the other.

imho neither LL has any strengths on the other, they are both good, of course the '12 is a frame lock, i like the blade shape on both but like the '13 better strictly for aesthetics, just looks better to me, both are made from good materials, i prefer the '13 due to:

*its waved

*the handle feels more secure in my hand.

Thanks guys , what do tou think about spyderco for utilitu and defense and how it compares with those other two?

I just got and atr a few weeks ago. Titamium handle one actually. For me, it's a very nice knife, and I specifically chose it over all other spydercos for my edc rotation. I see the atr as a better hard use work knife over the other two. The tip's very sturdy and the handle is comfortable. I also like the compression lock (in both ss or ti) over the liner lock on the other two knives. My knife has some blade play as I got it used in a trade. Iterestingly enough, I already sent it in to spyderco once to have it refurbished, and it came back exactily as sent, by mistake. -So it's going back one more time still, and once fixed I expect it will have no blade play. One thing I have considered doing is to actually grind the tip down to a little more of a point. Obviously that would weaken the tip (might void the warranty too), depending on how much steel is removed, but it's just a bit too blunt for my preference. If you plan on using the knife for digging, prying, or any type of stabbing into a hard material, the atr would the better choice of the three I think.
One other knife I'd take a look at would be the spyderco chinook-3. It's almost like a cross between the cqc-13 and the military.

I don't have an Emerson but I have both a small and large CQC-7 from the first batch made by Benchmade.
I now have an older Military with full serrations, the new Military with BG-42 blade and carbon fiber handles slabs. I also got the Para-Military with the S30V steel blade.
1. I just love both the Military BG-42, and Para-Military (I just keep forgetting where to put my thumb to close it:confused: ).

2. I do not like chisel ground blades like the CQC-7's that I have...a real bitch to sharpen.

FWIW, Go for the Spydercos!

Ciao

The CQC13 is a V grind chisel edge. Sharpen it like any other, except only on one side and you deburr on the other

sorry spyderco ATR model!

the Ti ATR is imho the very best spydie around, the SS model is close behind too. i have 3 ti's lol, i still carry mine some even though its mostly been my '12.

imho the ti ATR so far outclasses the millie its not even in the discussion, better handle/blade shape, better materials, better lock, thinner and carries better, just a lot better knife imho, too bad they disco'd them,

now between a '13 and a Ti ATR? Ti ATR all the way imho.

I've carried a military for the last 4 years at least. Worn out a few pockets with it. I JUST switched to a Blade Tech MLEK. First knife in a long time that I like better than the military. Here's a size comparison. It has a similar lock, a better grip in the choil, and it's S30V.
