I'm sure this is a dumb question. But I have to ask anyway.Has anybody heard about the Military going to the Compression Lock?

I haven't heard anything about it. This is probably because it may not add anything significant to this popular and long living knife. What do you think?

Sal has said on the spyderco forums that Eric has a tip up carry, compression lock prototype he's been working on. Whether it would replace the original military design, or be more of a Paramilitary XL, is not known for sure.

However if they do release one I will have to have it...

It wouldn't be a Military if it had a compression lock, it would be a new model. A hybrid sort of, between PM2 and Military. Leave the Military just the way it is!

Call it the Military 2. Or Paramilitary XL. There's room for both!

I did finally check out an old pre cqi military not long ago, and I could get along with it. Still would want tip up carry, but I'm fine with a liner lock.

This topic again? Then my opinion again. If the blade and handle shape and size are the same as the production military, it's better called Military. Doesn't matter that it has a compression lock and tip-up carry option. If it becomes a production version, then call it Military 2. The fluted ti military above has a R.I.L lock and it is still called a Military. If it is a proportionally blown-up PM2, then it makes sense to call it Paramilitary 2 XL.

There can only be one Military!

But at one point the frame lock on the Military was a new thing. How is that different from introducing another lock?

I just don't think it would feel like the same knife with a compression lock and tip up carry. The Military is known for it's tip down carry, action of opening and closing a liner/frame lock. It's a perfect knife for my every day uses. I guess I'm from the camp of, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

A compression lock isn’t really very different than a liner lock. It’s a stronger liner lock accessible from the spine of the knife.

Spyderco has done other knives in the same model with back locks, liner locks, and compression locks.

Not that it makes a huge difference to me what they call it, so long as it’s essentially a Military with a compression lock. Military 2 would certainly make sense as stated by someone in this thread or the other, considering they mentioned an updated choil as well.

Interesting, but first I need a run of regular milies in a 3V/4V/Cruwear type steel, so I can swap the blade into my ti/CF handles.
