Spyderco Model?

Thinking that Santa should bring me a new duty knife, I've been carrying the same old CS Voyager for many years.

I like Spyderco, I have one of those cute little Dragonfly models, and I found the quality impressive.

But which one? I want a full-size folder, I like a plain edge, (alright, I'm a fossil) and I don't care for the stainless handles on the "Police" model.
The Military seems durable but rather expensive.

what length blade equates to 'full size' ?

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a plain edge Delica (3" blade). There is also a great deal to be said for the Endura (3.5" blade)

Both are available with fiber reinforced nylon handles -- inexpensive, many find them more comfortable than stainless steel, very strong.

Plane edge Deleca with FRN handle is my choice. I also recommend you get the latest model with VG-10 steel. It's an excellent lightweight EDC capable of doing real work.

This is exactly my suggestion. As an added bonus, this folder has an ambidextrious pocket-clip that can easily be changed to the other side for left-hand carry. However, if you need a longer blade, the Endura is pretty much the same folder, but with an (almost) inch-longer blade.:).

The Military is great. you can get the Police model with G-10 handles instead of the SS ones and carbon fiber handles for it will be out soon (next few weeks I believe).

Thanks for the input! I just went by the "mall" knife store and looked at the delica and the endura- both impressive. Can't imagine anyone buying anything from one of these places, though-hell the cutlery is cheaper at Sears...

The Military is rather expensive, and I put off buying it for years. But I finally got it a few weeks back and I never take it off anymore. If liner locks don't bother you, Military is the best. I absolutely adore it. :)
P.S. This does not mean I don't love Gunting, Chinook, Endura, etc. just as much! :D

I think you answer you own question mwerner: a knife like the Police, or Military, but no stainless handles and not as pricey as the Mil,or the Police...that describes the Endura. You won't necessarily get CPM 440V steel or G-10 but maybe you really don't need that any way if it's just for occasional use or self-defense carry.

Yes, the mall knife stores are expensive but they do have way more variable and fixed costs, overhead, etc. whereas internet dealers do not. Also, they offer full service in that there's a sales clerk there to let you handle the knives. I try to do my part in supporting them by buying the less expensive knives there and buy the expensive ones on the 'net'.

Native is a good 3" folder. Very comfortable, and holds an edge for a long long time.

Couldn't agree more to my previus speaker(s). The Delica is the choice. The FRN model is light, left/right carry, VG10 steel (OK, there still can be found ATS-55 models, which aren't bad at all, really). Also you may consider the Calypso jr. - though a discontinued model, it still can be found on Ebay at decent prices.
And there's also the Native. All of these are available in plain edge and the blade is under 3".

Go for the Endura in VG-10. Its my 70% EDC for the last six months and I really like it and find it very durable and practical.

If the Endura ist too big, take the Native, best ergonomics in this size.

I just recently started to appreciate the natives blade profile and good it looks, that may be a way to go for you.

Mall Stores- we've only got the one here, so I can't claim any experience; but the employees look like the same bored, staring-off-into-space lads that you see in all the cell-phone kiosks....

Our closest Mall just expanded, now they have room for even more cell-phone kiosks.

I have to agree with the forumites who have recommended the FRN Delica. The blade options are the more difficult part of the equation. I think that the PE, 50/50 and Spyderedge all have their place. You need to decide for yourself which of them will fit your particular needs. Whatever you decide you can't go wrong with the Delica line, IMHO.

I'll toss my vote in for the Native. I have a number of Spydercos and love them all, but the Native just feels like an extension of my body. Very ergonomic and easy to control.
