I just received my Moran Drop Point. I don't know why I didn't buy this knife sooner. This knife is perfect. The handle seems made to fit my hand.

I noticed some wavy lines in the steel. Is the VG-10 forged, or is that how VG-10 looks?

I don't think the VG-10 is forged...as for the wavy lines, my Calypso Jr.'s finish looks the same way. It may just be a steel that doesn't polish out the same as , say, 440C. Perhaps a peculiarity of Spyderco's finish .

VG-10 doesn't take a high polish like some stanless steels; early comments when it was introduced alleged that it has an 'orange peel' appearance if viewed closely. My Fallkniven F-1 was exquisitely ground to a flawless finish when I got it, but in a couple of years of use it no longer looks new and has some scratches from use. But what the heck -- it cuts better than any other stainless steel I've used.

Yes, it is very nice knife for outdoors use - lightweight, easy to carry and use, very handy, great cutter. One of my very first choices going outdoors!

The blade is stock removed, not forged. I do not think that such “orange peel” surface is characteristic for VG-10 steel as itself. The first edition of Bill Moran Featherweight had convex edge and polished blade. Rather this look is provided by some kind of finish, I don’t know how SPYDERCO do it but all my Spydies with VG-10 blades look similarly. However Fällkniven blades look somewhat differently, closer to satin finish another brands use.

Thanks for the replies. I'm planing on using it as an EDC knife. I've found that it rides better inverted on the belt. In the regular position, the handle keeps jabbing me in the ribs. I'll try horizontal carry to see if that is better. Anyone know who makes good IWB sheaths for the knife?

I kind of like the wavy finish on the blade.
