i own both of the spyderco moran fixed blades, i was wondering if any of you guys use them as a survival knife or in the bush? do they do well in this purpose?
i only use a sharpmaker on my fixed blades and these come up nice and sharp.

I've always wondered what others thought about these knives, they look very ergonomic. I'd be tempted to try one for food and game prep, but not for heavy use because I think they only have a half tang. Any thoughts on edge retention? I do like the look of these.

I have the drop point version and it is my field dressing knife when I go deer hunting. The blade is 3 1/2 inches so its a really handy size for many things and the thin stock and full flat grind make it a really efficient slicer. As far as a bushcraft knife... the very fine tip is far to delicate for drilling, but other than that it a great knife for woodworking.

I have a drop point Moran, but don't use it much. It's very comfortable, and VG-10 is a great steel. It's not a full tang, so if you have reservations about beating a partial-tang knife, that would be a consideration. I've used mine for game cleaning and food prep, and it works just fine. I'm not a fan of the kydex sheath or I would carry it more.

Ditto with what the others have said. I love mine, but keeping it for game processing, it's a little delicate for heavy wood working, but great for cutting meat.

I've often wondered about it. I keep returning to it as a real possiblity for a boat blade and like its handle better than the aqua-salt. That cheesy textured FRN like on the delica just doesn't do much for me. However, the moran handle looks very attractive. I would imagine the comment about the delicate tip refers to the model with the upswept tip and not the drop point.

Basically, I think the blade would work for bushcraft. Might be small for processing wood, but will do everything else well.

I have both and really like them. I keep the upswept Moran (older, full convex version) in my pack for food/game processing around the camp. They are very light and functional. I don't use them for tough chores, but for basic bushcraft, I don't see them any less durable than a Mora knife.

I have been eye balling the drop point for years, it may be about time to grab one.

Ken- I only have the drop point, that's what I said has a delicate tip. I assume the skinner does as well but I don't own that one. There have been three or four version of the Moran's over the years and mine has a full distal taper. Combine that with the 1/8 stock and full flat grind and that gives a very thin tip.

They are excellent knives, especially the earlier ones with convex edges. VG10 is just about the only stainless steel that I care for and Spyderco does it very well. The blade is quite thin and they cut/slice like crazy. They also come with great sheaths. Get one now!

at the moment i cannot afford to buy another hatchet or axe :( when i get a job again i`ll be interested in getting a snow and neally or a gransfors bruks (sorry if i`m spelling it wrong) . until then i shall have to make do with my fiskars hatchet , my estwing leather handle hatchet , or my Bahco axe and Bahco hatchet . you guys will find this odd but i usually carry my SOG knives seal 2000 in the bush , along with a swiss champ SAK.

NOTHING wrong with the SOG seal 2000. I have used one for years in the bush. gave it to a CDN Forces grunt a few years back!

I thought I add some images, that show the relative size of the Moran to knives you might have.
