Looking for a fixed blade in this size range for EDC. Have narrowed it down to these two. I will have a custom kydex sheath made for the F1. I know the production Moran sheath is superior for EDC. If you had to choose between these two knives which would it be and why?

Dennis,
You have one tough ass choice here buddy!
I have both and when I'm looking for a knife in this size range to carry for the day, I suffer brain freeze as I look at them trying to decide.:D
It's finally broken when my wife yells "LET'S GO ALREADY!!! JEEZ!!"

I know yer gonna hate this, but, you should get both.:p

Hey Dennis....

Although the Moran is a Very high quality blade, and has a Whack of uses..The Fallkniven rules for being a brute of a knife for it's size...

Definately the FI...In it's size range and style,, it's Very hard to beat, both on price and useablity...One of my favorite blades..

Just for the sake of being nosey,, whos custom FI sheath do you have and why do you consider the OEM sheath to be superior??:)

Go with the FI dude,,you won't be sorry...

ttyle

Eric...

Isn't that kind of like comparing Apples and Oranges?
I thought the F1 was a good all around utility knife,
and the Spyderco was a skinner.
Am I missing something?

The Spyderco Moran is now available with a swept point blade. It is still a very good skinning knife, but I think it would do well as utility/camp knife.

I have both and can't decide. I'd be sader if I lost my polished convex edge moran but that is because I can't replace it.

For EDC - I personally wouldn't carry either. Both are outdoors knives and pretty far from each other IMO. F1 is a bit too thick to my taste (for an EDC) and Moran is basically a skinner. As EDC I might lean to Moran as it is lighter and shorter.

I've got both knives too and you really can't compare them - the Moran is an ultra light slicer, the Fällkniven is a much more sturdy tool. I'd say it depends on your intended use, but I would probably pick the F1 as an all around carry knife. Both are very well designed and executed pieces though.

Regards Jan

I too, have both. But I use the Moran drop point more. Probably the sharpest knife I own. The F1 is just a little too thick in the edge for my tastes currently. I have yet to thin it down, but that will be done soon.

Haven't decided on who to use for a F1 sheath.

I like the Moran sheath better because it allows for a variety of carry options, as well as riding a little higher than the F1.

I also have both knives and I basically agree with Tommy and Danbo - Moran drop point is lighter and has better sheath for concealed carry. F1 is a bit too thick as for EDC, I would like it to have the blade not thicker than 3,5 mm.

On the other hand F1 can take certainly more abuse with its full tang construction and 4,5-mm thick blade. For professional or emergency use - police, rescue, firefighter - Fällkniven F1 probably would be better. Perhaps with custom sheath, the factory one certainly is designed for field use only.

Try to handle Moran before you will order it. The handle is somewhat controversial. It works nicely for me but friend of mine couldn't find comfy handling position through his palm doesn't differ from my too much. The handling comfort is pretty individual thing, F1 handle seems to be more universal.

One thing I like about the Moran is the super light weight. Around the house and working in the yard, I like to carry my Moran drop point as a neck knife. Really, it's a little too big for that, but because the knife is so light, I can get away with it. And, the very nice kydex sheath is VERY secure. A lot of knife for about $60.

I thought the Fallkniven edge was too thick. For me the Moran with the drop point blade is a great camp/utility knife.

Actually, I like a little bigger blade than either of these knives offer, but I bought an F1 after handling a Moran and deciding it was too light for my purposes. The F1 is a very good knife, and I use it as my EDC around town (I own and operate a commercial barbecue on wheels) on my cooking gigs. Out of town, I'd go for a larger fixed blade, but the F1 would still work pretty well. Instead of the Moran, I got an AG Russell Deer Hunter. I liked the thin, drop point blade and the handle fits my hand better than the Moran. Don't get me wrong though, the Moran will do the job. Hey, if you want a really neat knife in that size range, get one of the smaller Doziers. His D2 is hard to beat for the money.
