Sal started quite interesting and promising project - Spyderco Mule. Blade + full tang without handle for around $70. Piece of steel to test - they will produce identical knives with different steel to test and see steel performance.

It will be great if all famous knife manufacturers with their special steel will join this effort. Especially Busse with their special steels - INFI, SR101 and SR7. Make Busse Mule under Spyderco specification from you steels.

Can you negotiate this with Sal and make it like knife community effort?

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. This is what I am talking about:

So all the knives from all the manufacturers that participate will have the same design as the one above?

Do you want it heat treated for slicing optimization, prying optimization or batoning optimization?

Well, I think if Jerry join it - it will be for him to decide. May be for all three use case. I rather have it for slicing - do not really do prying or batoning.

Thanks, Vassili.

As far as I can tell, the only way it even could work is if the blade geometry was equal. Only then could you accurately compare the different steels.

Affordable blanks to experiment with would be fun though.

Very interesting idea. We already know Sal will work with other companies on special projects. I guess it's up to the other companies to agree to make identical blanks of their steel with their heat treat, for a comparable price, for knife knuts to buy, customize, and compare to the Spydie versions.

I insist that the blades need to be able to throw and pry and then let my son torture test them....to determine the winner!

Well it would also depend on what the different manufacturers have going on. Its not like there are all just sitting around wondering what to do next. And to dedicate time, material and personnel on such a project - one wonders how much return they could expect for the effort - just so blade people can play around with different types of metals?

Just my 2c:)

The Mule 2's with M4 at $70 are still avaiable. The first ones of 1095 at $40 sold in a day or two. I hope the project continues, but Sal has said if interest stops in these the program will stop.

He has the next few steels already picked, and after those are used I kinda dought the program will be able to continue. I hope it does, but with the M4 mules still sitting there it doesn't look good for the long run. INFI would also put the price higher than the M4's that havn't sold.

It would love to have a Mule in INFI though! But don't see it ever happening.

As Major Charles Emerson Winchester III would say.....

"Thank you, no."

I think him meant not for himself. While a good idea Busse has made a few with no scales, the price of a Busse like the Spyderco Mule would still put it out of many peoples price range, unless maybe a smaller unscaled mule with a comp finish could get the cost down a little.

I believe the price of the Spyderco Mule is close to the cost to produce them. There is little or no profit built in.
So I'm not sure the Busse would have to be more expensive.
